I have a button that gives them a little "nick". About 1/5 of a second of shock. An attention getter. We went through the "nick" phase, then the "im only going to respond when I hear the beep phase" to the "HEEL means HEEL" phase.
    I use the tone differently.

I started Jenna with a clicker. Every time she did something I wanted her to do I clicked and she got a reward. When trying to train a new trick they have no clue what you are asking. They will jump, lay down, paw or bite at your hand, spin in a circle or any other random act. I "charged" the clicker by asking her to sit or lay down and the moment she did it it was a click and reward right away. These pups WANT to please you. When working on a new command as soon as she does what the new command is she gets a click and a treat. Now she is older the click is the treat and then fun time, ball chasing, belly rubs is job is over time to play. Now I use the tone as replacement to the clicker. The tone comes from her neck and she can relate it to the behavior from much further than she could hear the clicker. There is no warning. Command- nick- then she should be doing what ever command I ask. At that point she gets a tone and maybe a treat/reward. Or a little electric stimulation to remind her I expect her to respond the first time I ask. This method has resulted in less nicks, more responses, and if she is 50 yards out and I ask her to sit the moment her butt starts down she is rewarded with the tone. Then " heel" "come"and she comes in for the treat. Everyone does their own thing. Not claiming this is better.

When they do something you like from a distance, its encouraging for them to have the tone as a reward, or to let them know they did what you wanted them to do. She truly wants to make me happy and do what I ask, unless distracted by food/critter....You can see the " high five, I just got that" in her eye when she figures out what I am asking. Tell em right and she goes right on accident, give her a tone.... Her ears perk up and she is now starting to relate left and right as a command.

Catahoula's are not good family dogs. I think my dog is being stolen from me little by little.

I seem to get some mixed information. I am wanting a dog that is good on the blood trail but can also be an inside family dog when not working. I realize that Cat's need a firm owner who understands the roles of a pack but I dont want a four legged crack in the house either! Any thoughts would be helpful !!

They're all crack heads when they're pups all dogs lol. That being said my cat is a gentle giant. He will cuddle with my wife. And get on a trail when I start ringing his tracking bell. Fight with cows and love kids at the same time.

I love my 4 legged crack head. she is an inside dog. Kenneled when we are gone. She seems to be doing fine. She is requiring more out door time as she is getting older. A short walk is not enough. But a short walk to the open field by the house to chase the ball, run in circles mixed in with weekend adventures she is fine. If I am limited on time throwing the ball on the roof and letting her try figure out where it is coming down at and the attacking it seems to get some of her energy out. When I have a day there is not going to be any walks, ball throwing, or extended play time a raw hide on the couch in my lap is enough for her. As long as she is not alone she is happy. But yea she is a crack head. but that's why she has a e collar to help reminder crack is bad....

So far as long as she is included in the family she is fine. I don't expect her to get any crazier. If you have the time to include your dog in all parts of your life like a kid, I say go for it. But if you want a kennel or yard dog I don't think it will work well for you.

This is my first catahoula, so take it for what it is.... She will not be our last catahoula!

Goofy crack head that is very smart and eager to learn, and ready to go any time. Destructive if left alone and board.

But I am very impressed with her behavior. She used to run out of the yard anytime she saw someone walking down the street when I was outside with her. Now she just stands and watches them. This was after being zapped every time she tried to go in the road for a few days.

We have a 2 story house. If I can't find her I can yell "Heel" and she will come running from anywhere.
Mine likes to run big and one day I couldn't find her. I had an old dog whistle and pulled it out and started blowing on it and darned if she didn't appear to see what I was doing. So, that now is her signal that I want her next to me now. Of course she gets a treat when she comes, but she is the first dog I have ever had respond to a dog whistle.

they can be pretty hyper but a little running around and playing outside will calm them down. my girl chills out alot after a little bit of play with my other dog

Marko, how's she doing at home? Mine is doing pretty good, but can't leave her unattended for 5 minutes.
