They will jump, lay down, paw or bite at your hand, spin in a circle or any other random act. I "charged" the clicker by asking her to sit or lay down and the moment she did it it was a click and reward right away. These pups WANT to please you. When working on a new command as soon as she does what the new command is she gets a click and a treat. Now she is older the click is the treat and then fun time, ball chasing, belly rubs is job is over time to play. Now I use the tone as replacement to the clicker. The tone comes from her neck and she can relate it to the behavior from much further than she could hear the clicker. There is no warning. Command- nick- then she should be doing what ever command I ask. At that point she gets a tone and maybe a treat/reward. Or a little electric stimulation to remind her I expect her to respond the first time I ask. This method has resulted in less nicks, more responses, and if she is 50 yards out and I ask her to sit the moment her butt starts down she is rewarded with the tone. Then " heel" "come"and she comes in for the treat. Everyone does their own thing. Not claiming this is better.
When they do something you like from a distance, its encouraging for them to have the tone as a reward, or to let them know they did what you wanted them to do. She truly wants to make me happy and do what I ask, unless distracted by food/critter....You can see the " high five, I just got that" in her eye when she figures out what I am asking. Tell em right and she goes right on accident, give her a tone.... Her ears perk up and she is now starting to relate left and right as a command.
