my cat has selective deafness instead of directional deafness. She only hears you when she wants to....

TxHoghunter is correct on breeding cats. A lot of breeders are breeding for the wrong reasons and good hard hunting cats are becoming harder to find because of typical "American" breeding.

American breeders dang near ruined German Shepard dogs and a lot of other breeds. You have to breed for soundness, physically and mentally.

That's funny in more than one way. I think my girl has the selective deafness as well. Heck every woman I have ever met has selective deafness.

I thought catahoula was an American breed? From "american" breeding.

I agree most people should not breed dogs. I disagree with because they are white they should be killed. Thats just racist!

One of the things that I have noticed lately is a lot of dogs showing up with a lot of white on them, especially on the heads. Just a word of warning....many dogs with a lot of white have healthy issues. Many have what is called directional deafness. The dog can hear but cannot tell which direction the sound is coming from. It can be hard to detect because at home the dog has learned where the noises come from. They also often have issues with their eyes. Some are blind while other might just have a pupil that is misformed. Often with jagged edges. I am not saying that any of the dogs posted have issues. I am just throwing out a general to people to be careful with catahoulas that carry a lot of white. The first time I experienced direction deafness was in 1985. It can be hard to figure out that first time.

my oldest has limited hearing in one ear, but has pretty easily learned how to correct for it. it presents a challenge more when she cant see me, but her blood tracking skills are quite impressive. i am sure glad we didnt take her back. i used to raise catahoulas too and was aware of the ear and eye risks

LOL....As I was looking down the thread I saw your dogs and thought those are prime candidates for it and then I got to this one and saw your response. It is amazing how well they learn to cope with it, but it is also why they can hide it from people that do not know what to look for. Glad your are working out for you.
