Poor advice from your vet on the first part.

You were lucky on your dog that lived to 10 years. He likely dealt with minor erosions of his stomach and you just didn't know.

Wish humans had the resistance to snake bites dogs did, mine got bit by a baby copperhead when she was about six months old. Got her on the lip about halfway up. Half her face stole up for two days, went back down and she was fine.

Sounds like your dogs swelling is going down, but for anyone else give the Benadryl, keep cool like said albove
Take off their collars if bitten anywhere near face or neck

I've been using Vetrycin on wounds with good results for our animals it is a bleach type solution similar to Dakins solution
Also the Blue stuff coating is good for wounds to keep clean and help fight infection

Sorry to hear about your dog. Glad it seems to be doing better.

While I have it on my mind I have a few questions:
Does everyone recommend the same treatment if a dog is bitten by a rattlesnake? I have always read to get it to the nearest vet with antivenom. Also, does anyone give their dog the yearly snake shot at the vet, suppose to reduce effects of a snake bite if it does happen?

Fire your vet. Ibuprofen is a terrible idea for dogs.

Rattlesnakes are bad medicine. I've lost two dogs and they had the vaccine. I now give the vaccine every 90 days as it reaches peak effectiveness at 45 days. I keep 4mg/ml dexamethazone at 1cc for evry 20 lbs. as soon as we have a bite. SHove one or two benadryl down (depends on size of dog) and 20mg prednisone tablet. I've literally seen the swelling start to go down in bigger dogs in minutes, but I take mine to the vet. They usually give the dex again intraveniously. I'm not that good at hitting veins. I now have a stun gun too. There is some real interesting research on stun guns and snake bites, scorpions, fire ants, etc when it comes to stun guns. Luckily haven't had to use, but I will. I've killed 14 rattlesnakes since easter and I caught 33 in March. We have all we can stand and more hogs than you can imagine. Hogs haven't had any impact on number of snakes in our area

Just to update the thread..... My dog is fine. As of this morning the swelling is 90% gone and he's running around like nothing happened. I just gave him the 1 benadryl and kept him cool in the house. Thanks for all the replies.

Mom used to pack our dogs in ice and kerosene soaked rags. Dogs recovered within 24 hours. Don't know if it was her cure or just natural progression of the poison.
