I haven't read all the responses but The Sherrif officer that came out to our house told me as long as I am carrying my gun on me and I don't have to go back inside to get my gun that there would be nothing they could do to me for shooting their dog but if I go inside to get my gun then go back out they would view it as I wasn't really threatened by the dog because I went back outside (I think it's Bull Crud that she said I had to already have my gun on me) but that's the law so I made sure to tell her I'm always packing heat when I go outside

Too bad the dog must pay for the responsibility of the owner. All breeds can be trained..if not...BANG! With that dog be so close at my childs window...Way too close for comfort.
        Be careful and aim straight.

You are correct - the person who told you that is incorrect. If the threat is there when you return with your gun, you have the right to shoot it.

You cannot shoot a dog for just being there, either. It has to be a threat to you or your livestock.

As you know, I know this law particularly well.

Experience is that 45acp 230gr jhp in the neck works really well in this situation.

I had a issue with a dog at my old house.he pinned a jogger up against my fence one day I was in my garage.I threw a hammer at him as hard as I could but missed.I began shooting him with a bb gun every time he was out he eventually would not leave his back yard even if gate was open.but I say protect your family and harbors how ever you have to

Don't poison it. That's too slow and painful when it really seems to be the owners fault in this case.

I say go with the 12 ga., the echo off the neighborhood fences and houses is very effective at helping other neighbors from getting lax with their responsibilities and maybe keeping the original one from bringing in any more useless dogs.

Within the last week, the people across the street and to the left have left their gate open, allowing their dog to roam free. Big, stout, block - headed dog. It got through their neighbors fence and attacked/crippled their Boxer and charged at 2 other neighbors. By the time they came back outside with a firearm, the dog was back in its yard.

Confronting them does no good. 2 or 3 families live their and it's always "it's so and so's dog, and they're not home". S.O. has come out a couple times, but the dog is always back in it's yard.

5 AM this morning, we could hear barking through the baby monitor. I get up and go out the front door, and the dog is looking in my kid's window, barking and scratching at the screen. I attempt to run it off and it charges me. By the time I'm back out with the 9MM, the dog is back in its yard.

Noone can walk their dogs unarmed, no kids playing in the front yards, etc.

I AM completely within my right to shoot it if It comes in my yard aggressively, right? I won't be caught outside without my pistol again.
Has anyone reported it? Yes, you have the right to protect your family and property.

I do not agree with poisoning an animal, any animal. If the dog comes back in your yard you should shoot him in the head with a shotgun and be done with it. No need to make an animal suffer for what you think he might do, but you are justified in taking precaution and ending his life if it comes to it.

First mistake was confronting them ,second was calling s.o. If you plan to get rid of the dog don't tell anyone . S s s .

                                This!

I am intolerant of roaming cats, dogs, and whatever else my neighbors are too lazy/irresponsible/ignorant to take care of. Called the S.O. one time before we were annexed into city limits and was told if it's on my property, menacing me, my pets, family member, or being destructive in any way, I'm on solid legal ground to do it. Doesn't mean I won't get sued, but I have an arguably solid defense. Deputy also said if it is in the street--don't shoot, but the second it crosses the property line--lights out.
