    red fish question

    Per TPWD: Red Drum

Red drum special regulation: During a license year, one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed Red Drum Tag and one red drum over the stated maximum length limit may be retained when affixed with a properly completed Bonus Red Drum Tag. Any fish retained under authority of a Red Drum Tag or a Bonus Red Drum Tag may be retained in addition to the daily bag and possession limit as stated in this section.
    Daily Bag:3 Length in Inches (Minimum - Maximum)20 - 28

Does this mean I can keep up to five fish if I tag one over 28'' with my licnese tag and tag another over 28'' with a bonus tag?

The way I read it, you can keep your daily bag limit and one time only you can kept an additional over-sized fish or an extra fish that day. The daily bag limit says "three", not "five".

For example in the speck regulations, it says one fish over 25" and it "counts as part of the daily bag and possession limit". The redfish regs do not say that and use the words "in addition".

Daily possession is three reds 20"-28". In addition to that a person can keep one over 28" by applying the annual red drum tag. A person can then get a bonus red drum tag. So in total a person can keep two redfish over 28" a year if tagged properly.

So that means a total of five if properly done

To me, that seems pretty clear based on this sentence.

I see how it can be read that way but I wouldn't risk it... I'm not sure if you could get the bonus tag fast enough to do it either.

              I don't think so.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to send off for the "bonus" tag, so you wouldn't have that tag to keep a 5th fish on that specific day.

FYI - oversized redfish aren't very good table fare. The meat on those large fish typically is fairly tough and a lot of them have worms, etc.

Thats the part I was reading that leads me to believe 5 can be kept.

You can only keep 3. One of them can be over 28" if properly tagged. You can then send in that tag and they will send you another tag, but no matter what you can only keep 3 a day. The tagged fish is part of your daily limit of the 3.

So you guys that are saying you can only keep 3, what do you think the red portion of this sentence means?

Any fish retained under authority of a Red Drum Tag or a Bonus Red Drum Tag may be retained in addition to the daily bag and possession limit as stated in this section.

If you have no tags that means 3 to me. If you have a Red Drum Tag and use it then you could have 4. Bonus Tag, 5. That's how I read it but , hey, I don't fish the coast, lol.

The "in addition" is the other 2 fish.

Argue 4 but please quit arguing 5. 5 is not option here however you look at it. You have 1 tag on your license for 1 redfish over 28". You have to apply for the second one by mailing in the first used tag. Even if you use the $40 overnight express mail it won't be back by the time you get off the water.

FTR: I read it as you can keep 3 slot reds and 1 over 28" for a total of 4 fish.

This. You would only have 4 redfish in your possession if you used the over size tag on your license. AFTER you use that tag you can send in for the BONUS tag.

Yeah...like I said I don't fish the coast but I just read where you can only get the bonus tag after using the one that comes with your license. My argument is solely about the wording of that sentence.
