Beltronics are good radar detector, but some highways uses airplane to check your speed. Pavement are mark down with solid white lines across, one to clock you in and one to clock you out and calculate your speed. After that they radio your speed to the officer in the patrol car.
I would like confirmation on the rumor, but when I was in training to be a US Navy Electronic Warfare Technician in 1994-96. Our instructors told us the best automotive radar detector in the world was the Valentine 1. The V1 was said to be the best radar detector available to the civilian population 20 years ago and was designed by a former US Navy EW Tech like myself. I haven't used one personally, but it seems to still be the top choice today. I am going to send them a message to see if the rumor from 20 years ago is true.
It would be easy for me to believe the rumor is true as we were in the same industry at the time, the fundamentals are the same as a military application where identifying missile seekers and fire control systems passively was really important. Identifying radar gun parameters used by police is even easier, since you are largely concerned with parameters in only in the frequency domain.

I pass right by LEO doing 72-73 in a 65 speed limit and they never look twice really dont need to go much faster than that and the himi gets about 22-23 mpg at that speed with the auto pilot on.
If you do anything long enough you can get the speeds, kind of like when we went through stand field sobriety tests {sfst} after you watched the a person perform theses tests especially the horizontal gaze nystagmus {hgn}test you can tell if someone's blood alcohol level {BAC}is over and if you do it enough or do it daily you can come close to estimating their BAC it's not hard just like learning any other skill. kinda like estimating distance on a bow or rifle shot before range finders it's a learned skill....
9500ix owner here. This thing has saved me more than a few times. Enough to pay for itself for sure. I don't always drive fast, but sometimes it just happens. No detector out there will beat laser, or the officer judging speed by sight. So, there is still risks.
I agree that you should mount it up high on the windshield out of the way like Bill in San Jose posted a picture of. I do that with mine and it almost cannot be seen unless you stand right at the hood of my truck.
I have a valentine1. I also use the waze software on my iphone (as a gps/traffic and then the added benefit of police if someone marks the location). One thing with my radar detector is with more cars using side assist technology to tell the driver what is around them it is starting to cause more problems my V1. I believe the cars use Kband to detect what is around them. High end Audis are about the worse for causeing my V1 to freak out.
I was told a good technique when you know you've been 'zapped' is to give "the policeman's wave" by moving your open hand palm forward along the top of the steering wheel- a discreet wave used when an off-duty LEO passes another on duty. Maybe it's only a CA LEO thing?
