    Career advice

I am looking for some advice from anyone who might have been in this situation. I am currently working for a great company. Been there 3 years and have received substantial raises each year. These raises will likely become a normal 3% from here on out. At this point, I am not challenged enough in my current spot. The position that I am ready for is occupied by my boss who has about 15 years before retirement, but he is also positioned for a promotion. If he were promoted, I would be guaranteed his spot and would be perfectly fine with working in that position the rest of my career. The problem is, I could go elsewhere right now and make anywhere from 15k-30k more per year. Should I keep waiting on my boss to get promoted/transfer or make a move now?

That's a tough one... Are there any other perks to working where you currently are that you may not have elsewhere? What about the people you work with, etc?

There's also the ole "I have been offered a job elsewhere and while I don't really want to leave, I have to do what is best for my family." You should probably only do this is you actually have another offer but it got me a $10k/year raise one time!

Alot of things can change. If you can make more money and feel comfortable with security in the new job I would go for it.

Couldn't really ask for a better boss or more stable company. The 7:30-4:30 hours work out nice for our family. Those hours would change with a promotion though.

          1. Does the money benefit you/family significantly?
          2. Is there room for growth at the other opportunity, unlike the tight path u have now.
          3. Does a move make you more valuable (resume) to other opportunities in the future?

Could you make the 15-30 more a year working the same amount of time and with the same amount of effort? Doing the same job? The most important thing to me would be can I do a job that I love to do and like to go to work to perform each day. Happiness does not come with money. Stress can change your life big time. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Same job, same hours, more pay, and a job I love to do. I would think seriously about another 30 a year.

The money would benefit the family significantly for the future. Things are not tight by any means, but the ability to take care of future education expenses for kids along with socking more away for retirement is always nice.

Each opportunity would have to be looked at from a growth perspective now that I have the necessary experience for these opportunities. My current job has been a huge resume builder.

Happiness, stability, and peace of mind are priceless. I have seen way too many people jump for the money and get burned. Good luck!

I am almost certain there would be more time, effort, and responsibility involved with a new opportunity, but this would be no different than getting promoted at my current place of employment.

I have seen alot of people stick around for stability and peace of mind only to have the company sold and everything change.

aint no such thing as a guaranteed move up....I would get 5 years in were you are and what you are, then start looking...but I'm old school

I'd agree. You should only do this IF you already have another offer in hand that you would take. I know bosses always say "I wish you had talked to me before" but I don't think they really do.

It won't cost you anything to develop some better alternatives to your current position. I would explore and maybe even negotiate a little with the other group. If the culture is compatible with you, I'd get an offer and go back to your company. If you don't like the culture, it's not worth 2x your current salary, let alone $30K.

Do you know anyone who used to work at the other company? Maybe worth a chat to find out about the culture there. Just proceed carefully. Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. The longer I work the more I realize that is true.

The reason I know it would be a guaranteed move up is because my boss nearly transferred about 6 months ago. Things were already in the works for me to take his spot.

This is the route I am leaning towards but I have yet to even consider starting the interview process with these other opportunities. Culture would probably be at the top of the list when finding out about the company. Any decision made would be thoroughly contemplated since this is really a turning point in the future of my career.

Are you tight enough to just ask your boss if he has a timeline of when hes going to move up or transfer without it negatively affecting you? I could do that with mine but all situations are different.
