    Prayers for my dog!

My GSP is always killing something. Coons, rabbits, opossums, skunks and many snakes. Well last night he battled a very healthy copperhead. This morning I heard him barking non-stop and looked to see what was up. Well the snake was curled up in strike mode and my dog bitten over half a dozen times if not more. Face and throat /neck all swelled up. I've read past threads and decided to ride it out. Don't get me wrong, I love my dog and have had him for 9 yrs. How much Bynadril do I give him? Thanks

Hate to hear that he got bit. He doesnt look too bad off. Dogs that weigh up to 30 pounds should receive a 10 mg dose to start with. If this is not sufficient, then follow the above guidelines for giving one milligram per pound. Dogs from 30 to 50 pounds can be started with a 25 mg Benadryl pill, while dogs over 50 pounds should get a 50 mg dose. It is safe to administer the recommended dose every eight hours. Hope this helps.

has prednisone proven to be helpful in these cases? is he rattlesnake vaccined? and what does anyone know of the cross reactivity of the vaccine, geared obviously for rattlesnakes, when it comes to copperheads and water moccasins?

not in the vet field, but in medical, we give prednisone to help as a strong anti-inflammatory for the reaction

Prayers sent. Last I heard the vaccine is geared to only produce antibodies for the diamondback rattlesnake. Keep the dog cool, still, and filled with the recommended dosage of Benadryl.
