I think these are different than what OP is looking for. These aren't really portable as you need a 12Vbattery for it.

If you run an apple product to play your music, look for an Airplay enabled player. Less compression on the music so it sounds better.

I made my own from an ammo box and Parts Express and and speakers. Sounds better than anything I've found, but you have to be willing to make one.
I made mine specifically to fit in the basket behind the seat of a golf cart.
