My dad has worked for Dow for over 40 years. He has retired and went back and about to retire again. All of my friends that still live in Lake Jackson work for Dow or a contractor that works within Dow. It is a great company that is going to always be around and you have unlimited possibilities to move up. I would take that job in a heart beat.

Take It!!!! Go to school at night or online, basics first. After two years of that, decide if you want a degree that helps you at DOW or want to still pursue home building. Otherwise, you would work a crappy job and go to school so you really aren't losing anything and stand to gain a lot.

If you're not gung ho on going off to a big university right away then definitely take this advice. You can get a lot of the basics out if the way at Brazosport College while making some money at Dow. You can reassess your decision every six months. I would normally say just go to college, but this opportunity is better than your standard job offer to an 18yr old.

Thanks for the input guys. A little "old" wisdom is sometimes the best in a situation like this.

I currently work for Dow as a Process Operator and I would reccomend you research this offer a little more and make sure you get all the facts. I know pay varies by site but most Dow Process Tech jobs require a degree. So you could potentially hire in as a distribution operator get your degree then become a process tech/operator. So to go from entry pay to said $35 an hr could be a few years.
All that said if they are going to start you out at $35 I would say go for it. If you have any questions PM me, ill answer all I can.

I have no personal knowledge of DOW but always heard it was a good company to make a career with. Sounds like a super fantastic offer for a high school grad to receive.

The homebuilder part I do have some experience with. I would give DOW the first shot, even at $less hr. and do some part time with a builder as an assistant. Deal with a few homebuyers and contractors from he** and see which one suits you best. Maybe even get a summer job first with a builder... you may have family that are builders. DOW probably not going anywhere soon.

I've been in construction for 37 years, it's been mainly good, but it's also can be very worrisome. If I was starting over and had the type of offer you have, I'd jump all over it. Dow is a great company, stable, good benefits, retirement, and security. Plus when you finish your shift you forget about your work and go do what you want. When your self employed in construction, you don't forget about it and usually are needing to be out chasing work and/or money. (the money you've all ready earned, but haven't gotten paid for)

I'd take the job and "play" house builder on my off-time. Lots of long breaks as a process tech at Dow.

FTR - I don't know that starting pay is $35/hr for someone right out of high-school. Maybe you have an in that others don't. Most have to move up after a degree to get that type of pay.

I work closely with dow as they are big players in the oil and gas chemical side. Great company, solid footprint in the business and several others not just oil and gas.

Jump on the DOW job and take advantage of the schooling and benefits.
That's how I started with IBM.

I have worked at DOW for the past 14 yrs. Alot of room for advancement. If your only 18 and no experience and they have offered you a job as a process operator, you need to jump on it and don't look back.

I work for Dow and have never heard them offer a job as an operator to someone straight out of highschool and send the to school. Do you know someone? We now require a minuim of applied sience degree in process technoligy or a bachlors with a certificate in process technoligy. You may want to check on this offer.

I'm going to school in August to begin my Associates Degree in Process Technology Applied Science. I'd hop all over it of the offer is real.
