I am a senior in highschool who will be graduating in a few weeks. My plan in life was to be a home builder. Four year business and construction management degree. A week ago I was offered a job with DOW as a process technician. DOW sends me to school which they pay for and start me out at $35 a hour with guaranteed overtime every week and full benefits the day I start with a 401K plan. I realize DOW is a great company and and has plenty of room to climb the ladder to bigger positions, my question is should I take this great offer or peruse my dream as a builder? The 18 year old kid in me has a hard time saying no to making 80k right out of highschool. What's y'all's thoughts.

Take the job & work on the home building on your days off. When you have built up a clientele & a good reputation then you may want. To go into the home business full time. The money & insurance.at Dow will be hard to pass up. I started out in a chemical plant after college - worked as a operator & one I have moved into the EHS side of things and I am making great money & home every night, a little prayer. May lead you into the right.direction. Good luck!

Like you said hard to pass on up that kind of money at that age. Work and save everything you can. You're still young, and just because you take this job doesn't mean you have to give up on your dreams too. Sometimes also as you get older your dreams change. Good Luck with whatever your decision is though. Keep us updated.

All job postings I have seen for DOW chemical requires a degree and/or experience. If you have received a job fresh out of high school making $35 an hour and a nice 401K you need to take it and not look back. You can still take college classes online and I bet you that DOW has a tuition program that will pay for those classes. Continue to learn and advance, if you want a degree in construction management, I can almost guarantee you can do both.

Take the job from DOW! Just curious....which site is this at? lol I've been at my current Dow site for a few years and we actually TOP OUT below $35.
I'd take that job in a heartbeat. It took me 3 years after graduating highschool plus going to school at night for 1.5 years after work to get this job. If they're going to do all that you need to take advantage of it!If nothing else, do it for 10 years and work the homebuilding side on your time off. (you get 14 days off every 28.) In 10 years you'll have a nice little pile of cash to start your dream job if you want to do that....

Holy crap. How did you pull that off?
I would take that in a heartbeat!! Good operations experience is hard to come by and can get you a job dang near anywhere you want if you play your cards right later on down the road (i type this sitting in the middle of a gas plant)
I would not hesitate to take that job. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity right there. Congrats on the offer. If you dont take it, youre insane haha. Do it and finish your school on the side. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I can tell you from experience my uncle started with DOW back in the early 70s as a general work hand and now he is a senior foreman making bank with a BAD AZZ retirement. If I lived down in Brazoria, Clute, Lake Jackson where my uncle is I would have been there as well. TAKE the job....you can always build houses if you want later. Maybe you will be working under him. Who knows

Hmmm I worked at Dow for lots of years. Maybe you're the exception and maybe they are just trying to get you in the door with "up to $35/hr" but do your homework. Entry level at Dow is in the $20s range. Visit with IKE. He can fill you in on the "new Dow" and the real benefits and pay. Anyway you look at it you should proceed. You can make a fine living for yourself at one of the safest companies in the world.

I have worked for dow for nearly 31 years, they don’t pay as good as some of the oil/gas company’s but do pay well. it’s a large stable company and with the housing market the way it is now it would be a no brainer for me, take the job. by the way I know a bunch of operator making in the 120’s with overtime. Good luck either way you go
