          i say no tip.. bad service AND i would bet money he gave you the two $5s because he thought you would not ask for change and "just leave a 5"

            $5 is a 50% tip. Why give someone a 50% tip when they did a lackluster job. Why reward someone for crappy work? I would have given the waiter $1 in this case. That sends him a message. Better work, better service= better money.

              I would probably just left the $5 but would never go back again.

              If all of the story is accurate I can understand not leaving anything.

                Entitlement mentality. It seems I encounter it more than I used to as of late.

                Poor service equals poor tip.

                To busy to attend to my table means I am to busy to crack my wallet for you.

                  50% is relative in this case. The difference between 15% tip and 50% on a 10.00 bill is 3.50. The meal was paid with a hundred.

                  I also don't believe 15% to be the universal tip percentage and will usually leave a much greater percentage when the total is not as significant.

                  Plus the food was good as he stated so I'd probably want to go back to there and wouldn't want to be known as the guy who stiffs people and would continue to receive mediocre service.

                  I guess I'm just the product of having worked in the food service industry and being on the other side of the fence.

                    The price on the menu covers good food. Tip is totally dependent on service. Bad service equals little or no tip. If Im out of tea and my waiter wont meet my eyes when I try to get more, tip is falling rapidly. Ill normally tip 15% on decent service. I have tipped much better on great service.

                    One night at Outback, Some friends met me and I had the 16oz prime rib medium. It took forever to come out but my waitress kept coming by and bringing bread and making small talk. She realized it was taking too long and told me she was going to see what was going on. The rest of the food came out but not mine. I told her that my prime rib better not be burning up. She came back in a little while with a brown to the center slice of meat. Now I had been there almost an hour and now I had to wait for another. She took it back and told the manager. He came out and apologized. my food got there just as the rest of my party was finishing up. She was almost in tears but I realized it wasn't her fault. Two other couples that met me there went ahead and left but I got the tab and ate my steak. When I was almost done, she brought me a huge brownie with icecream on it and apologized. I was way too full for desert and asked her if she liked brownies...that little gal sat down and ate that entire plate of desert while she told me her incredibly interesting life story.
                    The manager brought my ticket and was about to rip her for sitting at the table until I told him I invited her and appreciated the company. My meal wasn't on the ticket but the total was around 200 bucks. I tipped that little gal $50. I never saw anyone try as hard. 50 bucks and a big brownie made her evening.

                        So paying with a $100 bill changes the parameters? I didn't pull out a roll of $100's and then made it rain. That $100 bill was all I had on me and it was a tip from a contractor whom I saved a couple thousand dollars by doing two jobs back to back and working 22 hours straight to get it done. So tell me again, does possessing that one bill mean I throw common principles out the window because I must be "loaded"?

                        Also, as mentioned before, I worked in the service industry for six years. I know what tips mean to my livelihood. I also know that when I busted my butt, I made more $. When I slacked off and didn't hustle, my take home reflected. It doesn't get much simpler.

                        As stated before, restaurant was not busy. Waiter was just slow and inattentive. He would tend to a table and then disappear. He would tend another table, then he was gone. It was as if he couldn't handle more than one table at a time.

                        Do I feel bad about not leaving him anything...yes. He just should not have assumed he was going to get $5 because that's what he brought back. Who knows, maybe he is used to it because of all those who would have left a $5 no matter what.

                          I would have called the waiter over or gone to the cashier desk and asked for change for the $5 and tell them you need it because you didn't have enough change for a tip. Then left with $1 on the table and find someplace else to eat the next time.

                              I think you nailed it. We have become a society that expects something no matter what we provide. Can you say "entitlements"?

                                I had a waiter make a snide remark one time as I was leaving because I left a tip that reflected the service I received. He mouthed off under his breath. I asked him to restate what he said which he declined. I went strait to the manager and stated the facts of what took place in our interaction with one another. The manager quickly apologized for his servers attitude and asked me to give them another chance. I did based upon the fact that I liked the place and have always had a pleasant experience there plus the sincerity that I felt coming from the manager and my experiences since then have been nothing less than what I would expect.

                                I never saw the waiter that waited on me that day again.

                                If I am in a one time kind of thing I would have let it go. A place that I like and know that this kind of attitude is out of the ordinary and unacceptable I will say something and the truth is that they want to know these kinds of things as their living in dependent upon it and they appreciate the feed back.
