    Would you tip?

Went to lunch today. Food was good, service was mediocre. What I mean by that was, waiter took my order...someone else brought it out. Waiter never checks if everything was to my satisfaction.. A little bit later I run out of tea and tortillas. Seven min later, I get refill and tortillas. I finish and I wait forever to get check. I pay with $100 bill. Check total was $10.00. He finally brings back (4) $20 and (2) $5. I don't have any other bills. I'm not leaving a $5 tip on a $10 check (50% gratuity), especially for poor service.

Would you ask waiter to break the $5 or leave without tip?

    BTW restaurant was not busy.

I'd ask to break the $5. You could ask another waiter.

a lot of servers believe they deserve a tip no matter what I give a good tip for good service bad service bad or no tip. if I can see if a server is overwhelmed by his duties then I understand but when you can see them talking and goofing off and never make any rounds for the essentials that's just plain bad service.

Leave them a quarter and a note stating that tips are earned... Maybe they will get the message...

Nope bad service = bad tip. I'll leave a dollar sometime just so they know I didn't forget. I've had more that one waiter chase me down and ask if there was a problem. I'll explain that service was poor. No refills, long time for check ect.. They usually give me a dirty look and walk away. If they are swamped, then I understand but when they are just standing around no deal.

I would have left no tip. If the service is bad that is their problem not mine. I have to work for my money and so should they.

I would have asked to break the five and left a buck or two.

Service didn't seem too good either. Was it busy?

Maybe it's just me, but to leave no tip means the service absolutely sucked. You did get your food on time (even if not from that waiter) and an eventual drink refill.
