There's a nice population up there. I'll probably be up in Anderson and Freestone counties next week looking for those, pygmy rattlers, and canebrakes.

Might have to find some roads to cruise in Henderson if I have time.

I would love to go snake hunting with ya!

Send me a PM with where you are and maybe we can work something out.

Snake hunting East Texas rapidly slows down after mid-May, unfortunately. It's already gone down a lot and is mostly only road hunting (though it's pretty productive now). Unless we get rain along with a cold front, there isn't much time left!

I've also heard that Prarie Kings stink worse than any others. I wouldn't know, but just sharing and asking if you got whiff? Or if it's true?

When I was a kid, my dad and I would cruise the #3 road and the ricebelt rd after an afternoon rain shower. I'd shoot every cottonmouth we crossed and it was a bunch!!!! I miss those days.

I've found prairie kings to be the least offensive of any snake in regarding to musk. If it smells at all, it smells kind of like dirt. Sometimes it's even a bright pastel green color, incredibly enough!

Them most offensive by far are water snakes, garter snakes, cottonmouths, and ribbon snakes. Something about the aquatic diet seems to really produce foul musk.

Speckled kingsnakes stink pretty bad too.

Canebrake musk smells like cat urine.

Got it. I may have been mistaken on the type of King. I've only caught one Speckled King. That was on a golf course up in Nacogdoches. Regreted that only because we were far from the closest bathroom. About 5', but stunk awful!

I've caught a few smelly chicken snakes too. Cottonmouths were the worst. We caught and kept for a few weeks then released a rough green snake earlier this year. My 2 yr old twins loved that little thing. He was a cool and very gentle snake. My twins would run around with him around their neck. Didn't seen to bother him at all. I got worried that he wasn't eating the crickets I fed him. We turned him loose where we found him.

I see you hunt around Eagle Lake. If you're ever around there in the next couple of weeks, you've got a good chance of seeing a prairie king crossing the road between 6pm and 9pm. I've seen a lot at the refuge and some between pastures. I saw four on the road last Friday.

And those speckled kings can be pretty bad! It's pretty obvious when I come home and I've been catching speckled kings all day!
