Try peeling and slicing them about 3/8" thick and then and popping them in the dehydrator for trail snacks. They are naturally sweet and don't need anything added...My mom made fig preserves but they were REALLY sweet and those preserved figs were like eating oysters made of sugar and dripping in syrup...definitely an acquired taste...I will leave them for the birds before I make fig preserves LOL
Dang I had 5 trees when we lived in Freeport. I would pick them into a Zip Lock, freeze them and let Momma sort it out later. You can find all kinds of recipes for preserves and jams like in Ball canning books and such.
Hey Ol'man, when they start to turn purple, you'll either have to get your pellet gun out to keep the birds off them, or pick 'em. I love to eat them right off the tree. The longer you can leave them on the tree, the sweeter they will be. I love preserves, and also like someone else posted, sliced in a bowl of homemade vanilla blue bell... Also, if you can find a recipe on how to do it, dried figs are a great trail snack. I buy them for my elk hunts. They are high in protein and carbs... good mountain food.
