Just wondering how many of those who are offering up advise have killed multiple boars that go in the mid 200's? I kill alot of hogs with my bow and some of these responses have my shaking my head.

10" of arrow ain't gonna recover many,,, ever... you need to pick them up on the ground after a complete pass through.... you need to make some changes, heavier arrow, more bow, different broadhead and or hit location,, high lung is a low percentage shot on hogs

            quarting away
            or ear hole him

              72# bear carnage. 29 " draw. 306fps. I'm thinking I have enough bow.

Why would you gut shoot a hog?

With that set up, you get yourself and arra that weighs about 550 to 650 grains with a good cut on contact broadhead like a snuffer or wensel woodsman and you won't have to worry about penetration. with that Griz trick, it has a conical point... lose a lot of penetration with that especially if you have it screwed on a light shaft. I shoot Razor Tricks. my arras weigh 525 grains and they will blow right thru a 200# hog broadside. The low profile 3 blade will do better and the holes are less likely to close up than if you used a 2 blade (the BEST for penetration).

I still try for a quartering away shot and like CastAndBlast said, aim for the off-side leg. If you stick it in the offside shoulder 1/2 way up or lower, it will be a short trail to a dead hog. you'll likely hear or see him crash.

Plenty of bow. If I was being picky I would say shoot a heavier arrow (just judging by the fps). However, your setup will kill them all day long.

Everyone has a different way to kill a hog, and they all probably work. I would just remember that on the big pigs, shoot LOW and tight behind the shoulder or good quartering shot into the last few ribs where the shield will be less thick. I personally don't like trying to punch through the shield on big boars, but we do it plenty of times with the same end result.

                    Good Luck!

I've cleaned and skinned several dozen hogs of all sizes, this whole shield thing is a bit over rated IMO. I'm not arguing they have some thick hide and tough meaty shoulders but the whole shield concept...I think has been exaggerated with time.

I just killed a Nice 275 poundish boar a few weeks ago and pass thru with a 60# bow and a 388 grain arrow. Hit him square in the shoulder and pass thru the other side. A sharp BH and good shaft go a long way!

I would agree with this, you would have better penetration with a 450 grain arrow/broadhead moving at 280 fps.

I tend to agree. They aren't as scary as some think. A quality set up will pass through the shield. However, it will absorb a lot of kinetic energy from the arrow. As far as "meaty shoulders" goes, I do have to disagree. If you have cleaned plenty of hogs, then you know there is a drastic difference in the cartilage of a shield and tough meaty tissue.
