Glad you got a trap; hope it's the big, old-school, wooden kind. Wire about a third of a piece of slightly cooked bacon (1-2 mins.) to the bait tab and set it up along a wall so you can check it each day. Rats can't resist the bacon, and they can't get it either. Since they have to get hold of it and pull on it, you get a sure kill. Problem with peanut butter is they can actually lick lightly enough to get the bait without springing the trap. Problem with poison is they can become disoriented and even claustrophobic while trying to get out and seek water; therefore, being trapped in a wall to die and putrify. Yum
Edit: Also, since the first rat doesn't get the bacon off of the tab, just reset the trap using the same piece until you don't catch anymore rats for a few days. (Usually, where there is one, there are more.)Last edited by tradtiger; 04-18-2014, 03:37 PM.

Or you could just get a big trash can. Smooth on the inside, tall enough he can't jump out of. Put it along a wall with a ramp, stick, broom handle going up to the mouth of the trashcan. Put a peanut butter cracker in the bottom of the trash can. They'll jump in after it and wont be able to jump back out. Only downside to this one is the mouse is still alive and you have to do the killing.
If you set either of these types you will catch one the first night.
