Been using a CPA the last 2 years, its not helping plus adding another $500 CPA fee to the mix.

Also been retired these last 3 years made it even worse. Instead of being in that lower tax bracket we always dreamed about withdraws from the IRA become fully taxable. Try getting a loan for a retirement place based on retirement income. It forces you to dip into the IRA to pay cash for big ticket items and next thing you know you are in a higher tax bracket then you were ever in while working.

Sorry, that sucks. I had to pay too but not nearly that much.

The government needs to start reducing it's footprint. Starting with the 70,000+ pages of tax code. Should be about 5 pages.

CPA or not, get turbo tax as a double check against your CPA.

A license to be a CPA doesn't make you a good one.

I hate that you are finding out the joys of taxation. I am shocked every year at my tax bill. I have often wondered if I should work less and drop down a tax bracket. What kind of incentive is that on free market and bettering oneself? I love that I pay so much in tax and with my job still get to take care of the nonworking public for 0-30% of what I usually get paid. Screwed at both ends and I can't even write off charity work!!! What makes me happy is that I am a single guy who uses almost nothing out of the system yet I get to pay for a whole lot of it.

Yep they suck. I send in my lovely 14k every quarter and then they wanted 17k more. It's outrageous. I'm just happy to live in the land of free!?

Couple things that really help us..
Started 10+ years ago. We have the max taken out of our pay every paycheck. We also used to add an addition $50 a month. Then we have kids which really help, so when they were young it was the child care credit. Now they are older so it is all the summer camps that help us know. We also donate a lot of clothes and stuff to the Carring place and good will. Keep those donation slips. they really help. I keep track of all my travel stuff now that I know longer work for Dell and work for myself. All my receipts for blinds and material and feeders etc is saved.. My office at the house is used for Krivoman OUtdoors so I write off that as well as the electric bill to run that office. My cell phone purchase as well as the monthly bill. House interest always help too. I have always wanted to just pay the house off, but having that house interest helps come tax time..

Hope something in this helped. I would have them do it again. Unless you had them take out the bare minimum from the full time job as well as your wife, I cant see it being that much.

I wish we would go to a flat tax. At least everybody would know what they owe and we wouldn't be playing these stupid games.

Thanks for adding that. I meant to have that in my post. I cannot figure out why a flat tax wouldn't work. Seems much more fair and everyone would participate. Seems like with a flat tax we could also decrease the size of the government.

You forgot "and the Home of the slave."

Flat tax would be great. It's too easy, that's why they don't want it. They want to be in control and have us playing these stupid games.
