The small steel bowls from tractor supply are what we use. Less volume exposed = less evaporated.

Any pics of them using it?. I have had several folks suggest these but nobody has any pics of deer using them. And do you drain the tank during freezing temps with the exposed PVC?

            Homemade water station

I used a cheap cooler for mine. The first year of the drought I only filled it once. Usually lasts all summer with only one fill a year.

I have several pictures of them drinking out of them on my computer. Not on my phone though.
They are very low pressure and I never had to shut them off during cold weather. Got down in the teens several times with no issues. The expansion goes up the line unlike a pressurized system where there is no room to swell.

We have used the horse waterers from Tractor supply for over 12 years.
Inexpensive ($30.00) built in float, very few problems.
Every wild animal/bird on the ranch drinks out of these.

I like this setup. It seems to me that deer, especially bucks, would be more comfortable drinking out of a small trough that's at least partially buried, out in the open, and without a bunch of pipes and t-posts sticking up around it. The ones with all the pipes and t-posts and crap sticking up behind it just don't look like the deer would be as comfortable with.....especially bucks trying to drink with antlers in velvet.

This has crossed my mind as well but the top pic seems to nix that a little. Great setup for sure.

I don't doubt all of these work to some degree, but I still think the "open" designs would be "optimal".

Best way to monitor a water trough to see if the deer are drinking out of it is with a Plotwatcher. (Game cam that takes a pic every 5-10 seconds and plays back as a video.) Or a regular game camera on video mode. Depending on the delays programmed it can be sort of hard to catch them drinking.

We have some tucked in the brush a little and some wide open.
Doesn't seem to matter too much. Of course our deer on the ranch now
grew up with their mama's drinking out of these troughs. They are very comfortable around them..........I will say these are Time Proven and I won't change our setup.
These troughs are too easy. I think there is some over engineering going on.
