    Death at Lake Conroe -

Don't treat scrapes as something minor any more.

I know the family. The man that died was the FIL of my former Ag teacher, now superintendent of Woodville ISD. Very sad deal. My mom talked to his daughter and they had been fishing and he was spined by a catfish is what we were told.

this has been goin on for years, but i thought that it was mostly a saltwater problem. but yes, always clean a wound up promptly and watch it for signs of infection.

First freshwater episode I've heard of. Sad deal. Guess we need to carry bleach/water mixture with us on the boat.

That's a sad deal. I worry about it more than stingrays when I'm fishing on the coast. Got a cut on my foot last summer on an oyster reef and it was a couple of weeks before I quit check my foot every couple of hours, checking for infection. That flesh eating virus freaks me out! I think if one of the kids gets a cut while we're fishing I'm gonna have a nervous breakdown! LOL!

not to try and take any credit from this story, but I am wondering if there is a true correlation between the catfish spine and the bacteria in question.

seems like it may have been the first landing spot on the "jumping to conclusions" mat

                    This stuff scares me.
I carry a small first aid kit with me and have added a small bottle of wound cleaner to it.
Always clean and properly bandage all scrapes and cuts and not just when your outdoors, staph is in the same family as these flesh eating bactera and its everywere.

Definitely not the 1st freshwater case. Remember the young girl from Georgia swimming with friends in a creek/pond? She ended up losing all her limbs from it.

I don't know if the catfish spine had anything to do with it or not. That's the story my mom got from his daughter. I can see though how it would give a place for the bacteria to enter. And I wouldn't be too surprised by bacteria of any type being on or able to be transported by fish.

I don't think it would be from necessarily the spine itself. But fish have all sorts of bacteria that can be found on them, add in a cut and it can certainly create problems.

I know this from first hand experience. I spent the weekend on lake Conroe catfishing a few years ago. At the end of the day we were cleaning the fish and I happened to accidentally stab myself with the fillet knife (Covered in fish slime, blood and guts... everything). I cleaned it up and went on about my day. 24 hours later though I was sicker than I had ever been and I had a red streak running up my arm. I spent 3 days in the hospital fighting off the infection. Could have been pretty bad. I was only 22 at the time and always healthy so I am sure an older person would have a lot harder time fighting the infection.
