I know this from first hand experience. I spent the weekend on lake Conroe catfishing a few years ago. At the end of the day we were cleaning the fish and I happened to accidentally stab myself with the fillet knife (Covered in fish slime, blood and guts... everything). I cleaned it up and went on about my day. 24 hours later though I was sicker than I had ever been and I had a red streak running up my arm. I spent 3 days in the hospital fighting off the infection. Could have been pretty bad. I was only 22 at the time and always healthy so I am sure an older person would have a lot harder time fighting the infection.
Hearing of your experience makes me more of a believe in the reason behind this loss. I had never heard of it happening in fresh water around this area. Whatever the cause, it's a shame that the old man passed. I'm almost thirty so my health is something I'm starting to actually pay attention to now. Looks like I need to start carrying a cut cleaner with me from now on.

Bottle of peroxide (and Super Glue) is in my truck at ALL times when I'm in the outdoors! Very cheap insurance policy.

Could this bacteria in our bays and now our lakes have anything to do with massive build up on lakes and rivers and sewer treatment plants not properly treating before releasing? I drive by treatment plants that look same as they did 20 years ago although area and population has grown tremendously .

that's what I'm thinking. the bacteria that usually was the culprit in these situations only thrived during periods when the water temp was warmer
