    Official 2014 Crossfit Open thread

Finally the 2014 Crossfit Open is upon us. On the eve of the announcement of the first workout, tensions are high in box's around the world. Will it be a 7 min AMRAP of burpees, no one knows except "The Madman" Dave Castro. 5 weeks, one workout a week, 5 days to do it, and you compete against 200,000 other crazy people who enjoy the torture that is Crossfit.

We can compare scores, strategies, and encourage. Good luck to all.

I signed up, but not expecting much as I've only been doing it for about 6 months. We are also doing a team thing within our box for everyone that signed up. I think we have 55 total signed up.

Anyone doing it should be resting a little more this week. Good luck, I got one gym member who is doing it.

Four Reasons Every Crossfitter Should Perform in the Crossfit Games Open
My box wants us all to register. I guess I don't mind donating $20 to HQ, but I'm not convinced I should attempt, especially since I'm STILL battling a shoulder problem.

Looks like we're doing 13.1 tomorrow.

I have found that there are so many "little" victories available during the Games Open. I would say that there is no single thing in Crossfit that I have experienced that has helped push me to a better level of fitness than competing in the Open Games even though I know I could never perform to a level to make it to Regionals. Some of those things were workouts that I could not complete due to movements that I could not complete, they hacked me off at the time, but became huge motivators and victories in the long run for me

Huge motivators. Regardless if you make a splash in your region, are one of the top guys in your box or just doing this for fun and the first time, you will definitely without a doubt be a better crossfitter after completing it. It will show holes in your game, but that's the purpose of it. To test you. It also pulls deep on the competitive level and the crossfit community that I love.

We have set up "Friday Night Lights" between us and 2 other boxes. This Friday we will start the open wod at 5pm down in Houston at Crossfit Skyline, next weekend we will be at Crossfit Conroe and the following Friday at CrossFit North Houston. The buzz and adrenaline you feel is equivalent to any highschool & collegiate sporting event when you get ready to approach the wod.

                            "Calm the f@&k down"
It's very critical to control your breathing, emotions and mainly heart rate before you go. controlling your heart rate and keeping it as low as possible it is so important throughout the wod. Who cares how good you are if before 3-2-1 your heart rate jumps to 150bpm and you have the equivalent amount of adrenaline coursing through your body as Godzilla. Just remember you are only exercising and you are NOT going to beat Rich anyway lol.... Stay calm and let the work you have put in leading up to this showcase itself. Other than that enjoy the hell out of this next 5 weeks

Where in other sports can you do the exact same measurable test against the best in the world?

I signed up. This from my post to one of our box members on whether she should sign up and why...

I wavered back and forth, for the same reasons, before finally deciding to sign up. I'm typically among the last to finish almost every WOD at CFP, much less trying to compare myself regionally, nationally and worldwide! Ultimately for me it came down to the reason I'm doing CF in the first place - to improve myself physically and mentally. Unlike a diet or weight loss program, however, "fitness" can't be measured on a scale - I'm EXACTLY the same weight today as I was when I started almost 11 months ago - so "improvement" has to be measured in other ways. Aside from vitals at doctor checkups (which have improved across the board), the only real measurable is time/reps/PRs against benchmarks. IMO, the Open provides five consecutive benchmark WODs that I can use as a personal benchmark for the future (with a pretty good idea of how I would have fared in the past). I figure $4/WOD (or week) is reasonable to be able to do it in a competitive environment.

Let the games begin! (and hope they limit any kind of S2O for my shoulder's sake!)
