Shoal Creek for Cajun food.
The Tavern for a good burger.
ZTejas off 6th Street has a great menu and is diverse. It is located in other cities though but has a distinct Austin feel to me.
Curra's off Oltorf has good Mexican food.
Maudies also had good Mexican food.
Hula Hut on Lake Austin has a great view and would be great for sitting on the patio in this weather.

People trip me out with Salt Lick. It is average at best. I live ten minutes away and never go, because San Marcos and Lockhart are the other direction. LOL.
Franklin BBQ (there is no S)
J Mueller Meat Co.
LA BBQ
30 minutes away in Lockhart:
Kruez
Smittys
20 minutes away in San Marcos:
Hays County BBQ
San Marcos BBQ
Threadgills is totally Austin for good home cooking.
I have never been but isn't Hoovers in Austin?
For Tex Mex:
Trudy's
Maudie's
Matt's El Rancho
Guerro's is a happening place on weekend afternoons.Last edited by Burntorange Bowhunter; 02-15-2014, 02:28 PM.

I'm with BOB, Salt Lick is garbage.
Avoid Torchys, salt lick, and any chain restaurants. Austin has tons of great local fare.
If you want to gamble stop at a food truck. Tons of great new ones opening and closing daily almost.Last edited by mesquitecountry; 02-15-2014, 02:30 PM.

Green Chile chicken fried chicken at Shady Grove
Steak fingers at Red's Porch
Casino el Camino or Crown and Anchor for a burger
Texas Chili Parlor for chili and tex mex
All of the above are very casual and have the Austin vibe.
And like BOB and MC said, stay away from Salt Lick unless you like to pay $20 for Bill Miller's class BBQ.
