Best route to Port Aransas from D/FW area?

We will be headed south to Port Aransas Friday morning. Brendan is 5 and not the most patient traveler, so were are looking for the quickest, safe route. Beginning at I-35 S. where would be the best jumping off point? The obvious route to me would be 35 south to 37 into Corpus Christi, but I have no recent experience driving to that part of the world. Construction, congestion, etc., will make a lot of difference on the actual roads we would need to take. All suggestions will be appreciated. What say you, TBH?

35 south to Georgetown. Exit on to South 130(new toll rd.) take it till it dead ends on 183. Head south on 183 and follow the signs. The toll road is alitle high(@ 7 or so bucks) the ride but it is worth it.

or you could take i-35 to 123 Seguin
123 to 181 to Sinton (change takes place in Karnes City)
181 to Gregory then 361 to Port A

We just went to Rockport & Port A several weeks ago from DFW. We went down Hwy 77. Go down i35 to Waco, get on Hwy77 and take it all the way down. Some 2 lane but a lot 4 lane. A lot more enjoyable drive than I35 and less traffic. I would do this again.

head to DFW international, southwest airlines to 35,000 feet. Land in corpus christi, rental car to port A.

There is no "fast" way from dalls to port A... it's going to be a 7+ hour drive no matter which way you go. I suggest getting a portable DVD player if you don't have one, and a crapload of cartoons for the kiddo.

if you can avoid austin and san antonio, you'll be miles ahead. WoJo's seems to be about right to me.

Don't know about how far west you are, but you could come south on I45 to houston and take the beltway around missing houston. Hit Hwy 59 and go south to victoria where you can pick up 77. that is 4 to 8 lanes all the way, and no surface streets until you get to the Port Aransas exit off 77.

I believe the safest way would be I35 to I37 to 358 in Corpus and up 361 into Port A. It is a little longer, but you are on highway the whole time, with no one pulling out of a side street while you are going 70 MPH.

We just did that from the Austin area. Not the fastest, but the least interuptive and not having to find a passing zone or folks riding your tail wanting to pass.

Have fun. My family had a blast.

He's got 2, just in case one craps out, with lots of Scooby Doo and Disney animated movies. Nintendo Game Boy w/a bunch of games, Leap Frog w/just about every lesson, and action figures out the wazoo. I just hope that's enough!

thats the way i used to go when i lived in Austin. If you come this way you will go through Taft after you go thru Sinton. Stop by my shop in Taft and say hello. Brezina's Tire right in the middle of town on Hwy 181. Your only 15-20 mins. from Port A at this point.

Kids dramamine from your pediatrician. Knocks em right out. Our son was a live wire that also got motion sickness and it was a real blessing...peace and quiet on the trip and a simple "wake up Wade, were there!" when you got where you were going LOL.

There is no short way. I 35 to Austin, (plan on getting stuck there in traffic for a lifetime) then on to San Marcos. O.K. if you can get the wife past the outlet malls ( if not there goes another lifetime) then on to PA. Catch a boatload of fish then do it all over again.

Just depends on the time your leaving. Constuction is not too bad and traffic is not great but ok. I'd go with huntindads route though the other routes are a little more scenic.

Mike hit the nail on the head. 35 South to Georgetown and pick up the new tollway, then get on 183 all the way down.

This is the quickest and most enjoyable route from Dallas.

I've made that drive so many times before I lived in Austin and I've tried all the different ways. The 35 S. to Waco to 77 is good but a lot slower time-wise. Now that the new tollroad is open, it is smooth sailing bypassing all of Austin.

                            J.P.
