My heeler is the best watch dog out of my four. She watches every car that gets near the gate. If she gets cranked up the other dogs get cranked up. Charlie is very sweet and loving with kids but adults she doesn't know need to be careful.

I'm not a fan of German shepherds, boxers, rottweilers, etc. Being a decent breed for blood trailing would be a big plus. Recommendations?
If you want a guard dog get a guard dog. If you want a blood trailer get a blood trailer. Can you cross train? Sure! But in my opinion I'd rather have a dog that great at one thing rather than ok at many. I know you're not a fan but the GSD is one of your versatile dogs and will mature protection wise quicker than most other breeds

LM, I know you believe the Rotts are loyal, not aimed to bash you. Do not remember exactly when you came and got the feathers but they are probably in the back yard and smaller then as they are only 17 months old when this pic was taken last month. Not full grown yet. Let us know what dog you get.

As soon as I introduce a new person he's good to go. They are special dogs.

I would prioritize the safety of your family over the ability of a dog to follow a blood trail.
I would recommend an akita. Amazing family pets. Protective and loyal. Had a 135lb male before/when my kids were born. NEVER worried about someone coming into my yard or house, and never worried about him harming my kids. They were his kids too.
I have a 9 month old female now. Same qualities as my male had.
Downside is they shed, and are expensive puppies. Also need a strong alpha person to be the boss.
Check 'em out!

Best protector I ever had was my 110 pound white lab. He was a terrorist when it came to strangers. If you came into the yard without our OK, he would put you on your back until we called him off. One time, an old man (late 70s) who lived in a trailer on our property decided to cross the yard. Pete grabbed him by the hand halfway and trotted him a 100 yards to the fence line which the old feller cleared in a single leap.

Same here I have three daughters 11,2,and 3 months. Very loyal smart and I have to put him outside before I attempt to spank anyone. Including the wife, lol
