Hope you bought a lottery ticket that day.

      You got lucky.

Yep and I saw a 190 + lb boar killed with a single shot to the forehead from a .17 cal Beeman air rifle -once. Will it work that way every time? No.

Agree 100%. Sometimes what works will not always work.

Buddy shot a big hog point blank in the face with a .45 ACP to put him down after it was down from a pure luck crippling front leg shot. He woke up 4 minutes later kicking and screaming so we ear holed him properly. Yeah, we screamed like little girls when the monster woke up.

When I skinned the head in prep for barbacoa, my scientist friend stuck a probe into the .45 entrance hole. The round never got past the sinus cavity. Hogs are hard to kill.

              Sorry you lost the hog

I would have killed the dog if it was growling at me on my place

First hog I shot with my 223 I shot behind the shoulder and never found it. I started shooting them in the head and I've found every one since.

After over 40 years of shooting deer, pigs and whatever else with .22 caliber rifles ranging from .22 Hornet to .22-284 I have found that bullet construction is key. Thin jacketed varmint bullets can make spectacular kills or fail miserably depending on the situation and velocity they are driven at. With a TSX or Nosler Partition and the same shot you would have had a nice blood trail for a few yards with a dead pig at the end.
                  That's what I was saying.

I usually shoot for the neck no matter what round I am shooting with. Somewhere between the ear and the shoulder typically shocks the spine enough that they drop. Last trip to the lease I shot a large boar at 101 yards with my 130 gr 270. I was aiming for the neck but hit him in the shoulder since he was still moving. I wasn't sure where I hit him at the time since it was barely shooting light. Went looking for him a couple of hours later after my deer hunt and didn't find any blood or hair at the impact site. Started following tracks and located small amounts of blood gradually getting bigger, then, it just stopped. Found him about 10 yards further. Hit dead center shoulder, no pass through. Like I said, he was a good one. Those things are tough.

Move up to bigger cartridge or shoot them in the head right under the ear and you won't have to track. I shot about a 125 pounder on Friday eve with my 243. Head shot. Drop in his tracks. My dad sometimes shoots them with 22 mag. Under ear is the spot. I use Hornady b t s p. 100 grain but its shooters pref.
