    Shot a hog, but.....

    Can't find him.......

This morning I sent a .223 Winchester ballistic vamint round into the front quarter of a 120-150# hog. He fell over and rolled down a hill 5ft. I heard nothing else and waited 30min.
Walked up to creek draw to find nothing......

I walked around about 10ft radius and found the blood trail! Heavy gushing dark red.
I trailed it for a few more feet in this creek and about every hog step had a splash of dark red blood. So I pulled out to get my vehicle and give it more time.

Came back and follow that trail through creek for 45yds, where I find where the hog had stumbled and blood was everywhere. Then a lot of tracks from other hogs and no more blood.

I circled that area several times and couldn't pick up the trail. We brought my 4 month old Catahoulas out and they are in training. They trailed where I went and I worked them for 2 hours on every trail they picked up, but no hog or blood......

I checked the fence line where the hogs cross and no blood at any of the spots.

In the mist of it all, before I had my dogs, I heard a dog barking on my lease property about 30yds down. As I got closer, it started growling and barking. Either at me or the missing hog. I was 20yrds and could see it, it was growling at me. I fired one shot and it ran off.

What a morning! And no hog!

      First blood sighting

Last blood all over cedar sapling....there was a rock about the size of a grapefruit covered beside this. That was it....

45yd trail of blood then nothing?

^^This is probably your problem. My guess...the ballistic varmint bullet did not penetrate enough to take out the vitals.

Yup, they are well versed in first aid. This is just another way they have adapted.

Last thing I shot with them, the bullet exploded and liquefied the lungs. And before that, blew a fox almost in half.

I would have had my 30-06 but last time I shot it, I missed the hog by a foot! That was right after I made sure it was sighted in. That scope might be bad or I messed the shot up.

Also there was blood drags, where it appeared that blood was running down and on the hogs belly.
My hopes are that he's coyote bait now! I've been battling them all season and think they have ran off what deer I did have.

Next time I'm sitting in my bow blind with buck shot!
