How to get rid of grass burrs...

...we went to our place this weekend and the grass burrs / spurs were ridiculous. Is there anything out there that will get rid of them? I assume Round-up?

Round up will kill them but it won't get rid of them. Prowel H2O is a pre emergent you need to put out in the early spring.

When I worked at the coop in Bryan we would sell a pre-emergent herbicide called Pendulum that people used for sandburr or grassburrs. I never tried it myself but many customers swore by it. Usually apply it in early spring like Huntemup suggested with the other product.

I bet you have sandy soil. The best way to get rid of them is to lime heavily 2,000lbs per acre and fertilize heavily. Do this in the early spring. It won't kill them but they will go away for the season. Unfortunately this has to be done every year. This method has solved my problem. I hope this helps.

I had a friend once whose family owned a house on the beach at Gulf Shores. It was located next to a Public Beach Access and he found some sand spurs and transplanted them in the path. A little fertilizer each year and pretty soon that access was getting no traffic. I'll see if he needs some transplants.

Talking about stickers? It is down right crazy where we are at. And yea sandy soil. No way we could put that amount of lime down. It helps remind my daugher whey you HAVE TO WEAR BOOTS! This year is crazy. Never seen it this bad.

Pre-emerge is the way to go. Put it down before they germinate in the spring and it will solve your problem. You may have to do it each year for a while, but it will do the job.

Thanks fellas. I will give the pre-emergent and/or fertilizer a try. We eventually want to seed or sod the area...I assume actual grass may help in choking the burrs out?

We sell Hi-Yield or Fertilome products and this is what is recommended by them. Our customers have reported good luck with using the Dimension product in the EARLY spring....

Atrazine - Post Emergence product that is safe for St. Augustine and Centipede grass only.

Treflan - Pre-Emergence Product that is safe for most Cool and Warm Season grasses but has a short residual.

Weed Stopper Granules with Dimension - Pre-Emergence Product that is safe for most Cool and Warm Season grasses.
