The limitation isn't penetration. I personally ranged a 5x6 when my buddy put an Ulmer Edge through him at 84 yds. He never flinched until the arrow hit him.

I also watched him get full penetration on a Javelina with a 54lb longbow, cedar shafts and a Zwickey at 62 yards. 99.9% of bow hunters have no business trying those shots though.

Thank you, that's what I was looking for.

It all makes since now. Over the years ive seen many wounded deer with slices and gaping holes in them that some may survive and some dont. I always thought it was fences. Not anymore

That 100 yard shot was pretty sweet.

last year I was looking at an old man taxidermy and some really crappy mounts from the 60s and 70s. There was a bighorn in the group that he claimed to have killed at over 100 yds with a recurve. Story was the sheep was over a ridge and he could only see its head and a little of its back. He arched an arrow over the ridge and center punched him. He also had a monster mulie he shot RUNNING at 75yds with a recurve. Hit him three times.

It might interest you to know that many of the icons of early archery hunting were very prone to make 100 yard shots at game with both longbow and recurve. The thought that there is a limit on shot distance is relatively new. Field archery grew out of the desire for a game to practice long shots in hunting situations and until recently included an 80 yard shot for recurve and long bow shooters. In fact the early courses often had shots of more than a 100 yards.

Those interested in the subject can read about it in the exploits of Howard Hill, Saxton Pope, Art Young and many others. If you are capable of making the shot with confidence then there should be no stigma attached. However, many try to write checks their butts can't cash and the animals often suffer for their choices.

The old, unethical ,100yd shootn, running deer killing, hunter I referred to in my above post was FRED BEAR. I got to view his entire trophy collection a couple years ago before any of it was restored.

I've been shooting a recurve for 5 years now( hunting with it 4 years).
I enjoy practicing out to 50 yds and plan to one day to hunt with it
Out to 50-60 yds. I stump shoot for hours every time I am at the lease on cactus and other stuff out to 50+ yds and typically get very close. I used to say a 40+ yard shot was unethical but now I say, if you can do it go ahead

Any type archery is a short range situation. If a person wants to take really long shots, then buy a gun. The choice of using archery equipment also should being along with it the concept of getting close. Getting close is one of the fun parts of bowhunting.

Solid opinion but its just that, your opinion. Many archers are capable of taking ethical long range shots. Howard hill didn't mind shooting running game. Even a lioness running at 70 yds.
