I hope to see him again or the one I was really after. I'm worrying too much about it. Y'all are right about a lot of season left. I may hit it again early.
Yes.
Not a big deal though. 2nd guesses will eat you up. Best thing to do is go out with an idea of your goal and stick to it. I go years letting bucks walk and sometimes kick myself in the arse for doing it. Not a biggie. You have to decide what your goal is and go for it.
Letting bucks walk and not taking one makes you no less of a hunter.
It is all your decision.
I think the biggest pressure on some hunters is trying to impress others. It is a personal deal as far as I am concerned. I could care a less what others think on my decisions concerning what I take and what I dont.
Have fun in the field and do what makes you feel good. This is not a competition.
I have had that happen, but I have also had the opposite happen too. Several years back it was my last day to hunt and I shot a young 2.5 yo 8 point because it was the last day of the season. Looking back that deer would have been massive if I had let him walk and not been so selfish. Now that I have a few more seasons under my belt, I would much rather hold off on a young deer and not fill a tag than kill a potential future monster.
On my current lease I have passed several young but legal deer over the last 5 seasons. It payed off last year at Hagerman getting a buck of a lifetime!!
If I want meat I'll take a doe or 2 and wait for "the" buck...

Dang near all of my regrets come from that place.
But after many years I go into that place knowing what I want out of it. Last year was a very big mistake for me.
Open morning of rifle season I passed on a good 10 pt here I watched him for an hour. I kept telling myself if he jumped the fence into my coastal field the 7 mag would put him down..That buck circled around two side of the field in my sisters place then headed off toward my father house trailer figured I hear a shot but papa was in his blind in back of my pasture.....this past week I had a large 8 pt that had a doe up against my fence between coastal field a yard he was chaseing off two other smaller bucks and still trying to keep her here.....He moved around and tried to put her into my cow pen but she out did him and last time I saw them they were headed east across the fields........I guess I am due a kill since I havn't killed a buck in twenty one years here....getting old I just watch them now....Andy
I have better deer and was hoping the wife would get this one. That's what makes hunting fun knowing there are better deer and being able to watch deer like this and pass on them.
I've passed before and thought i should of shot later on.. sometimes i ended up killing a bigger deer later on in the season sometimes it was the biggest one i had seen all season.. if i have to think about it i pass because most of the time when i see a shooter i know I'm gonna shoot from the second i see him.. you probably made the right decision no matter if you get a buck or not this year..
Yes I have. I've now, as of this morning, passed on the same buck twice. After getting a really good look at him this morning, THAT WON'T be happening again. Next time I see him, blood will be shed.
