    Why do you hunt?

After a recent discussion with a friend of mine about why we really hunt, I was curious what the TBH crew would say about that question. We all will have different reasons and I was curious about other hunters.

What's your goal when hunting? Why are you really there in that tree or blind?

I hunt because it gives me an adrenaline rush and ensuing sense of satisfaction that cannot be replicated by anything else in this world. Whether that is a big 8 point stepping out or whistling wings over my decoys. I also feel closest to maker when I am removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The outdoors is my church.

Tradition passed down to me. Since I have been old enough to remember, I have associated the outdoors with hunting and fishing. It's in my blood.

I love to watch animals that don't know I'm there. I love the rush when it's time to make the shot. I love the tracking and the emotions that go along with it. I love meat. That's it.

Because I'm a werewolf and it's always meat thirty! Relaxes me...keeps me sharp and I get a lot of enjoyment out of carefully tracking and choosing the deer and then going after them as precisely as I am able to. Thrill of the chase means everything!

For that rush I get when I decide to draw my bow or raise my rifle and the shakes I get afterwards.

Oh....fried backstrap might be part of it too.

I love venison and my freezer must have some annually. It's part of my household dietary requirement, and many meals are centric with venison as the cornerstone dish, in the overall meal. Since I prefer to live in Texas, I have the privilege to hunt them, as our forefathers did, to provide meals for my family.

Here's the commercial pricing for whitetail - farm raised animals.
Commercial, farm raised whitetail whole tenderloin (backstraps) = $35.95 per lb

Whitetail deer loin chops = $24.95 per lb

Whitetail whole loin = $22.95 per lb

The uncontrollable shakes I get after releasing an arrow.

It's a tradition for me. I feel it returns us to the base level of being human - having to find your own food to survive. It's a reminder of the past, it keeps you sharp and prepared. The feeling of being out among the animals is something that can't be reproduced any other way. Besides, once you go fried backstrap, you never go back.

The tradition, remembering time in the woods with my grandpas and sharing those experiences with my boys is the big thing. The reason I bowhunt is the up close and personal nature of the experience. Humans at the core level have always been predators and there are sadly few people today that understand that the way bowhunters do.

grew up doing it with my daddy so I think part of it makes me feel closer to him and I think (for most of us anyways) we have a longing to be like our dads or to make them happy on some level so that's a big part. I also love the close encounter with the animals that bow hunting gives you...kind of the bittersweet part of it with beautiful animals so close and majestic looking and then you kill them. I enjoy that thrill of it too and the stories and the time outside. It's hunting man and it's a way of life and a whole culture that is so rich and amazing.
