I dont care what anyone says, If I see a snake and my 2 year old is with me then I make sure she knows its very bad and then I kill it. You did what I would have done.

If I cant identify a good snake from a bad one at the age of 43, I dont expect a 6mth old, 2 year old, or even a 5 year old to be able to do so, and by trying to create a "teaching moment for your child" and showing him/her that the snake daddy is holding is harmless, what you've really done is taught the kid that all snakes are harmless and they will attempt to pick up the next copper head they see, just like daddy did.

Cool Snake....Would have just flicked him out in the yard with a broom. Or saved him to show the son later in the day.

this...although, my 8 year old woulda got it..but he's infatuated with snakes...he's better at ID's than i am...

don't get me wrong...he knows not to touch em unless daddy says it's ok, but he'll come in the house and get me, show me the snake and ask if he can play with it...he's been right 100% of the time...(i have to google it most of the time)

Why can't you ID them? Because your daddy didn't teach you to ID them when you were young. I never picked up a rattle snake when I was little and watched my dad let more than a few bullsnakes and hognose snakes live to see another day.

What I have been telling my son is this. DO NOT EVER MESS WITH A SNAKE, you come and get dad to take care of it.

This way, he knows not to touch them and then when I "take care of it" he is with me and I tell him why I killed or let it live. But in his mind. GET DAD is the only thing he should think at this time in his life (almost 4)

The day he says, "go job dad, that chicken snake will now go get a bunch of mice in the barn" then he can have the reigns on deciding about snakes.

oh and these threads make me laugh.

                            To each their own
