Tablets with a full size SD slot are not common. I have a Toshiba Thrive for my trail cams.

They are expensive but used ones are available on amazon:

Those of you using the Surface, what adapter are you using? MY Surface Pro only has micro SD and all of my cards are SD.

Are you using an SD card reader via USB or micro SD to SD adapter?

Can you view the pics off the card with the adapter without downloading to the Ipad directly?. Out of 2,000 pics, I usually only keep 10-15 ish. I have a laptop for back at the cabin but I'd like to be able to view pics in the blind occasionally.....plus we have multiple folks wanting to use it so it will help with time.

I have a Nextbook and it works good. I have just been considering an Ipad because I like Apple....

I have a 7" and a 10.1" samsung Galaxy Tab/Note. They are great for this purpose. You can either use the micro SD with an adapter or you can but a external adapter for the charging/USB slot that will take a SD Card.

Just about any tablet will be able to do what you want. The ease of which will depend on the operating system. I have a Galaxy Tab with what is called an On-The-Go cable. I put my SD card into a USB reader and plug it directly into the tablet. The Tablet recognizes it and I can view and delete photos in the gallery.

Honestly, if it will just be used for him to view pictures on, then you will want to go with something that has a nice screen, the capability to run an SD card adapter (not all tablets can), small and lightweight. I can tell you right now that the Nexus 7 (old or new generation, doesn't matter) fits the bill entirely. That would be my recommendation. Easily the cheapest and most fitting IMO.

I am telling you that the Surface will show better pic and videos than anything and it is super fast. I use a card reader and plug it into the USB slot. Anyone should seriously look and compare before you buy. I got mine on the advice from a tech nerd that does and can do anything with electronics and computers and programsmost of the computers here in school. We never have to call or get IT as he does and fixes anything. Best thing I have ever bought concerning computers. Seriously give the Surface a look.

Go on eBay under the staff tech daily deals and there are some very fairly priced tablets

What I DON'T like about the iPad is that with the SD card reader, all you can do with it is DOWNLOAD ALL the pics onto your iPad. You CANNOT just view the pics on the card, then, like the first poster said, it is a PITA to delete all the unwanted pics off the iPad. The Surface or Toshiba or Galaxy all would be a better choice for someone who is eChallenged. They are much simpler to use for a viewer.

Ok... here's my two cents as I carry 2 tablets around with me a lot of places, and work with a few others on a daily basis.

First, the Surface great hardware, but its future is beyond uncertain and its "ecosystem" is several years behind the iPad and Android tablet choices

Second, the iPad mini is a beast for the price. Especially the new Retina Mini. You can use an adapter to read SD Cards and the import fairly quickly. With iOS 7 you can quickly delete large numbers of files without clicking on every single one of them. Its a solid device with an incredible app selection.

Third, the Android tablets. The Nexus 7 is a solid device but importing from SD cards is far from inuitive and slow as molasses. Same experience with the Nexus 10. Kindle's high end Fire HDX doesn't have a SD Card reader either.

Fourth you have the Asus Transformer Prime, super great hardware, solid unit, and has a built in Micro SD card slot. I personally don't advise the Samsung tablets for a lot of reasons.

IMHO a Retina mini at $399 is going to be a hard deal to beat, but if someone isn't wrapped up in ultra nice displays the iPad mini at $299 is also a great device in its own right.

Samsung note 8.0 is awesome i use one to take notes on in class you write on it with a pen and it converts it to text, has a micro sd slot built in. and the new 10.0 2014 is even cooler.

Yes, Jason, the card reader does just that. See below:

Not true, at least not the card reader I use with my iPad.
The card reader quickly lets you view all the photos as thumbnails, then you can select the ones you want, check them off ONLY, and import just those. Just remember not to select "delete all photos" on the card after the ones you want are imported. That's what takes so long. I just put the cards back into the game cam to clear the entire sd card.

Yeah but the thumbnails are so small you can't tell what you have on camera until you save and view them IMO. You can see you have a deer there but how big is anyone's guess.
