I am starting this thread to help keep up with rut and deer activity in the Texas Panhandle. I spend 3 to 4 days a week in the field in Hemphill and Wheeler counties so I will do my best to keep yall up to date on what I am seeing. Hunters in this area are free to do the same.
So here is what I've seen in the last week.
The rut seems to be a little ways out. I am not seeing many bucks right now and what I have seen are still in bachelor groups. Though I have seen some yearlings with does they were not chasing. I am also not seeing any scrapes or rubs yet. If the rut goes as normal we should start seeing pre rut activity pick up around the opening rifle season.
Something I am seeing different this year is that deer are feeding at all hours of the day. I pass by a couple of wheat fields daily and there are always deer on them. That is unusual where I live, especially on a busy road. Maybe in for a long winter.
Good luck!
