Using the term "management" or "cull"

This is sort of a history question really since I have only been surfing the green screen for a couple of years. When did it become the "norm" to add the classification of "management deer" or "cull" to your the description of your deer when you post your LDP. And why do most folks do it?

I don't know when it started,

but I know a big disagreement exists as to whether they mean the same thing or not

To me, if I shoot it, it's either a trophy or it's not.

Anything thing else is a cull (or a management deer) whatever...

Every deer I shoot is a management deer...I managed to shoot it!

If I shoot at a group of does, is that a "union" deer?

Cull...undesirable genetic traits over 3.5 yrs old
Management....over 3.5 yrs old with good genetic traits but falls short of management goal of particular ranch.

Given that...every ranch I have ever hunted does not harvest any antlered deer younger than 3.5 years old for any reason.

Does harvest.....if it stands still long enough for a shot it qualifies

Those terms are legitimately used on some properties that are heavily managed to the point that they know all their bucks on sight. I get that, and culling is a useful tool on those types of places. I sometimes have a sneaking suspicion however that the term "cull" or "management" buck is often misused. Sometimes it seems to be code for "I know this buck is not a trophy, I call it a cull as my excuse for shooting it" I think that line of thinking is ridiculous - who cares what others think - if it is legal and you want to shoot it, shoot it!

It's hard to sell "culls" for $3000.

Here's my cull deer... He has less than desirable traits... I don't want to see his offspring in years to come.

I have a rather small deer heard I "manage" I'd rather all my deer look like the second deer than the 1st deer. so the first deer is a "cull" If I get a chance to shoot him I will get him out of the breeding pop.

On the same note that young deer is NOT on the kill list this year.

Management = Largest buck person can kill without being a trophy

Cull = second largest can be killed without being a trophy

Here is how we categorize it...I don't think there is a "standard"..

We use the term management deer for an older deer (usually an 8 point or less) that doesn't make our minimum trophy measurement. They are usually still nice deer but it's time for them to go.

"Cull" at our place will mean a deer with crap/freak horns that needs to be taken out and doesn't even come close to our minimum.

so why did you cull that ten point?

                            trying to manage the herd?
