              If it was an animal that attacked that deer, I would say coyote only because they can lose a fight to a deer but I don't believe that a cougar would unless it was a small cougar. Then again, I am no professional.

                  Worked a lot of car v deer crashes. Deer very seldom fair too well. Almost certain death. Or have to be put down. Not thinking auto involved.

                      Got word back on the pic, he said it is definitely an avulsion. This could have come from a cat possibly but he needs a clearer pic. But he said that it was definitely something that ripped or tore at it , and car did not come in his description, predator injury.

                            Looks like it was shot with one of those new rage hypodermic scalpel things and only got 2" of penetration.
