Back it up to the cloud then do the update from iTunes. This was the only way I could get it to work on my phone. Deleting texts and unused pics will free up space but not much. Take a look at your iTunes, get rid of any unwanted songs.

This might be a dumb question but how do you delete songs in I tunes?
