    Turtle Shell Salvage???

We have had a couple very large snappers die this year. What do you recommend to clean and seal them with??? My wife wants to use the shells as decorative bowls....

Clean them out and scrape the meat off. Bleach the insides well. Lacquer or shellac the outsides with several coats. A friend of mines Dad has several on the wall that weighed well over 100 lbs. One of which I shot as a kid that approached 120 lbs. I wish now I had never done that

Just curious on why not killing one? Endangered or something? Just cool?

The species is in venerable status. Almost endangered. They do not reproduce till the age of 12 13. I haven't seen one in a few years. Similar to the horned lizard.

              ^^This

I would not fault anyone for killing one, just think they are slowly disappearing

I saw one 2 years ago in a pool off of the main river near the house, not sure how big it was but it's head was big enough I never even thought turtle. Was looking at it thinking it was a stump about 8" across and looked away and when I looked back it was gone. Took my brain a few minutes to register snapper

The alligator snapping turtle is actually a protected spp in TX. The common snapper is not.
