    A,B,Cs & 1,2,3s

    Dear Lord give me strength....

Does anybody have any helpful ways to teach a 5 year old what these letters and numbers are?

My kid is crazy smart but she doesn't pay attention and I'm losing it!
She's been saying her ABCs since she was 18 months old but can only tell you a hand full of letters.....

I'll point at a letter and tell her 100 times, and she'll repeat it "that's a "T"" then move down the line and go back to "T" and she'll start guessing.....

My wife and I are getting so frustrated.
We don't understand why she isn't getting it.

This is not a recent thing... We've been doing this for about a year.
She just can't recognize the letters.....

Maybe try focusing on just one letter at a time? For example:
    Monday:
Start and focus on A...work on it all day.
    Tuesday:
Remind her about A, but also work on B

And so on. If she is getting hung up on a letter, stay on it untill shes got it.

Also, if you have a tablet or Ipad find some ABC's and numbers apps....I swear thats how my son is grasping his. He is 2, counts to 20 in english, and 10 in Spanish. ABC's can be hit and miss, he recognizes some letters...and usually can recite until L or M before P jacks him all up LOL

I got 3 kids and we associated the letters with animals. Worked for us.

May not work if she isn't into fishing like my youngest son. I took plastic worms and used them to shape letters. He learned his letters and a lot of colors that way but he still calls green, motor oil.

                  She likes everything.

I think we may have a winner. Only time will tell.

I took 26 pieces of construction paper and put each letter on one.
Aa Bb Cc and so on.

She looked at one sheet for a while.
I told her to trace it with her finger and say the letter.
Did that for a while then I took it away.
I asked her what the letter was.
And gave her a page out of a book (kids book)
Gave her a pen and told her to circle ever "A" and "a" she could find.

She did really good and there wasn't any frustration.
But she knows the letter "A" already..... So only time will tell.

At 5 this should not be an issue. There must be something more going on if you have been trying for a year. Possible dyslexia or another learning challenge? I would ask the pediatrician for advice/referral to a development or child learning specialist. It is better to understand the root cause of the struggle and get some guidance on how to overcome it than to beat your head against the wall and frustrate her as well.

May look into it if this doesn't pan out.

                        Maybe start here:

The signs of dyslexia can appear as early as preschool. Whether you’re a parent or teacher— or think …

It's just letter recognition that's her problem.

Flash Cards are a winner with my kids.

                              Go buy lettering decals.
Place the first letter of the name of items all over the house (B on a book.. L on an lamp, C on the cat etc)..
Ask her to tell you the letter ..then the name of the object..
Continue the abc "song" and flash cards helped us immensely
