Do you mean your current rod/reel, or the actual lures, etc.?
Your rod/reel will probably work fine but you need to take special care to clean EVERYTHING when you are done...reels that aren't designed for salt water can be ruined overnight.
I personally prefer a 7'-8' medium fast action rod and 20# braid or 12# mono. I use both bait casters and spinning reels designed for saltwater application.

I use a 7' Fenwick GoldenWing w/ Daiwa SS 1300....
.....8lb test Trilene and a 20# shock leader. Throw Gold weedless spoons and gulps. It is a really fun set up for Reds......arm gets sore if you catch a couple big ones in a row. No horsing them in & lots of line singing.
If I get invited to bottom fish I use my buddies equipment.
I would be afraid to put any expensive bass stuff in the salt...

Im a big fan of braided line but its definitely not neccesary. It would be a very good choice if youll be fishing around jettys or old pier pilings. Around jettys we use 50lb powerpro. Line tension and barnacles on mono = lost fish and lure. Water clarity is the only issue with braid if its super clear the fish can see the line. You really dont have to worry about that too much around the galveston bay complex or sabine. Gulp baits on 1/4 or 3/8 ounce heads depending on how the tide is moving are always a good choice. Depending on what kind of reels you have you should be very careful with them in or around salt water. A good all purpose spec and red rod is a med light 6'6"-7'. So where you going fishing?

LW, the chatterbait will work. Use a white or the chart one. I fish it and have caught some good reds on it. You can fish it shallow or deep. Run the flats and run it shallow. It will work fine. I catch some reds on just a plain ole spinnerbait. Best bet is a Gold Johnson spoon, tried and true. Top water is something esle when they hit it. It looks like a toilet flushing. Chart/white are really good colors for reds. This info is for Lousiana fishing. I am going home this weekend to try my luck. Will let ya'll know.

Try a Gold Rattle Trap. It resembles a Croaker fish. Be sure to use a 20-30# 18-24" shock leader of monofilament line connected to a larger barrel swivel. Drag that Rattle Trap's nose in the sand, shell or mud, lightly.
Reds should be on the edges of grass in the morning and late day. Fish moving water if you can.
Where are you going?
