    Axis Questions

Me and a buddy hunt a small piece of property near melvin tx. Its 70 acres and we were able to harvest 2 mature whitetail bucks. We knew we had few axis but come this spring they have really invaded the place. We probably have 5or 6 real mature axis bucks that are constantly on camera each with his own group of does. We went through 4500 tc pics last night and not one decent whitetail buck. My question is do they push out the white tail bucks? We had pics of a couple bucks earlier in the spring but hey are gone. I know its a good problem to have but sure would like to see sotme native bucks. Ill post pics of axis later on same thread.

Ours do the same. They will run deer off of a feeder for sure, and when there is only a small bit of acreage with more than one axis buck, it's not hard to see how the could run the whitetail completely off. If it were me and my buddy, I would shoot a nice axis each and a few does each and then have some whitetail to hunt by season. Axis are cool to have, but not at the cost of not having any whitetail.

Sounds like you have enough Axis that you should call upon the TBH brotherhood to help thin'em out!!
Let me be the first to volunteer.

If you have axis, you will never have high quality WT.

The reason is food competition. Axis eat 4 times that of a WT.

We don't have much of a problem with ours. We need to meet up at Jacoby's after a hunt this season!

For the most part they don't compete for the same food source. Axis are mostly grazers.

Eating Axis deer causes me to throw rocks at whitetail not to mention the pretty cushion and pillow covers they make.

I disagree. Different food sources for the most part.

If you have really good grazing pastures(which in the hill country is not likely) the axis will not compete too much with the whitetail. They will compete a little at protein feeders. You can try making food plots and that will help out a lot if you get them up and going. Other than that, enjoy the fine eating of axis deer. It beats any whitetail I have ever had.
