    Potentially free vehicle, no title?

A family member has a Chevy 2500 that has been sitting in a field for at least 5 years. He got it as payment for some work but was not given the title. It does not work and he said I can have it if I can make it run. Is there any way I can get a title for it salvage or some other type to make it drivable on the street?

Leave it! More trouble than its worth IMO!

yeah I think you can get a salvage title for it. I would get the VIN number and call DMV and find out what you can do. As far as running, it could be something really simple. Sitting for 5 years though who knows.

If it comes back stolen that would really suck. Take the vin to the dmv and do a lost title search

          Try a bonded title.
If you don't do anything with it I might be interested in it.

Or apply for a lost title to be sent to your address. it will not change ownership, so you will then have the address of the last owner to contact. Once that is done, file the proper change of title paperwork and easy as pie. NOT a big deal. no notary or bonded title needed.

Just got a 89' 2500 that was sitting four yrs. i got it for a ranch truck. I had to replace fuel tank and fuel pump-mainly due to varnish, it was bad shape. I had to replace the radiator and now that I am driving it, one brake line popped. Alternator bearing is squealing at times, so I am sure thats next.
Things to think about and price.

Yep. Done this before and that way you end up with a blue title.

So I could get a title on anybody's vehicle I wanted to? Just file for a lost title and once they send it to my address I could forge the paperwork and have a clear title on someone else's vehicle? Not that I would but that doesn't sound right. I would think you would have to show I.D. or something proving you are the one listed as the owner in their records.

There is way too much to getting a clear title. A friend was givin a boat and a jeep by one of his family members. The original owner had passed away and he thought he could get em legal anyhow. After even months of runnin around he drug both of em back and left em to rot in the field.

No it is not if you know what to do. I had the same problem. Had a free car in my drive way for 2 years and had givin up on getting the car legal when my cousin told me to call the place in my earlier post.
I got a bonded title in the mail in under two months. And it cost me less than $300 i think it only cost me 200. I then sold the car for $ 1000.
A bonded title is the easiest way to get ownership of a vehicle and your protected if the original owner showes up out of the blue. After 3 years it is no longer bonded and no one but you (the title holder) has any right to the car.

Thanks guys, I will look into both those options. The truck only has 70k on it and it will be an easy fix.

once you get the title in hand, as long as the signatures dont match, you can take the signed title and transfer paperwork down to the tax office with proof of ins on the vehicle, your cash in hand to pay for tax and licensing fees and thats all you need to do.

apply for the lost title through the mail and pay the 12$ fee for lookup and paperwork on their end, and the title is sent to the new address. you will not be able to go to a regional facility to get the title issued then and there unless you are the owner.
