if none of you have tried to start a fire - I challange you to try.... I was showing my scout troop a few methods and even using lint from dryer it is hard to get a hot spark. I dont mean using flint method or fire striker,etc...thats easy enough if you understand how to make fire.

I even took a cordless drill and ran it till 18 volt battery died and never got a fire going with a spindle method- its not easy as one thinks

But with only one item, as the show only allows.. i just watched episode 5, last night and the girl was a better surviverlist then the guy. she caught to Lobsters and he killed a baby ciamane.
I would do real bad, I think

        I would die very quickly.

I think I would do better than most on the show. I like to think my skills are where should be for not having any real survival training. I can do the primitive fire although its not easy but I can confidently do it. I like to also think I'm good under pressure. On a positive note I could lose 40lbs and not die...that's a plus.

Ive also noticed that not all wood species are the same when it comes to fire. What have you had the best luck with ?
The best thing for tinder I have found is to pull lint from your socks by taking a knife and rubbing the blade against the sock again and again until you get a nice little ball of tinder. put that in the middle of a bunch of dry leaves and once you get your coal drop that onto the tinder and blow slow enough to get the coal to glow red hot until a flame ignites from the tinder. Then just have a pile of dry wood that you scavenge from the ground on standby. The key is to start as small as possible and gradually work your way up.

My goal starting with this season when it cools down a little is to start working with my son on teaching him what i know about bushcraft and survival skills like shelter traps and weapons and learning together the tons of knowledge and skills I don't know and actually doing them not just reading or talking about them.

I need to learn how to make arrow heads out of rock that's one of my top things to learn.

I hear that a lot. I've learned however that it usually only really applies if said Country Boy has a 4x4 truck, running water and electricity and is within a fairly close proximity to civilization.

Take away all of that out past 72hours and it's a different story.

When Bear Grylls started the Man v. Wild show, me and some co-workers thought we could start a fire with no problem. So we grabbed some scrap cedar and got after it.

After several combined hours....one trip to the hospital for stitches....and lots of sore hands, we finally came to the conclusion that it wasn't as easy as it looked.

                          I'd give myself a 4.

I keep steel wool in a plastic bag in my hunting pack. If I had to, I could drop the 9v out of my rangefinder and start it. I picked that up during BSA IOLS training and it works.

Honestly couldnt say. I do like to think of myself as a survivor if anything. Just adapt and role with things.

Fire would be no problem right now....it's so hot, everything is already on the brink of spontaneous combustion.
