Keep in mind much of this just came to my attention this week. If he wasn't a family member and the lease a family lease the decision would be much easier. I would NEVER put my kids in any situation where I felt their safety was at risk unless you count riding in the car with my wife behind the wheel.
Unless he is in the business of choking out little kids I would not worry about it. Sounds like there is a personality conflict between the two of you. Without knowing the context of your argument, I can't give an honest opinion one way or the other. However, I find it a bit disturbing that you immediately call his character into question once you found out his past. Yet, you have obviously shared a few seasons with him. Yep, you should go before you let your feelings get both of you in hot water.

How are you related? Brother? Cousin? In-law?

Family or not, if this guy is willing to gamble spending more time in prison by breaking his probation, then there is no telling what he may do under the influence of alcohol. It would be very hard for me to stay on this lease with my kids in mind. Call his PO first so you know what his probation intel's, then call the GW, then if that still doesn't work and you really wanna stay then talk with his Dad and last I would talk with the landowner.

In the words of Sam Elliot on Tombstone, "Your dam right I'll risk it. They're breaking the law".

If he's on probation or deferred adjudication he isn't supposed to be in possession of a gun. Other than that his past is his past. We've all dine stupid crap when we were young, some got caught, most didn't...

Finally, someone said exactly what I was thinking. Knew if I read down far enough I'd find it:thumbup: He could have easily been at the wrong place wrong time. Talk to him about it and get a feel for what kind of man he is, heck....I'd do that before I start calling GW on him and talking to other people about him. Go straight to the source, that's what I'd do anyways.

No update. I'll see him in Sept., we'll talk and go from there.

I was on a lease with a guy that had a pretty storied past and it didn't affect me in any way. I'd hunt with him any time. Some people really do learn from the mistakes they've made.

If your that worried about it, pack up and go. Most of my family are the biggest outlaws I know and I won't hunt them.

How is he related to you? Sounds like y'all have grown up together.

I choked a guy once on bourbon street and would have went to Jail if caught. But hey he tried dumping over a port o potty when I was in it

Have you had concerns or were there signs that made you more concerned. I "sorta" understand your concerns, but maybe the guy got in a fight and choked out his opponent...thus the choking charge. Maybe the assault with a weapon was pool cue in a bar when he was young and stupid. I'm not defending the idiot, I'm just stating that he may not be a time bomb waiting to detonated....he might just be a dumb*****. I'm assuming that when I take my kids to Dairy Queen or Academy that I have them in the presence of convicted felons. The felons aren't supposed to have guns, but who knows. If he cannot legally be in possession of a firearm, then turn his butt in. I really do understand your concerns, but I'd talk to him before I up and left. Hell, just ask him. Tell him that you heard he'd had a rough past and you were concerned. Good luck either way. I know you're trying to do what's best for your family and you'll do the best thing.

If he beats you to death with a hammer, then I think we could all agree that my advice was bad.
