    Lease member with sketchy past

Through some digging of my own I just found out one of the guys on my lease has been on probation since 2011 and will be on probation through 2016. This was the result of being convicted of aggravated assault/impeding breath (choking), a 3rd degree felony, and I also found he had a prior aggravated assault with a deadly weapon conviction as well as multiple DWIs. How he is not sitting in a cell is beyond me. I had a confrontation with him 5 years ago that almost came to blows and since then have avoided him as much as possible.

Would you feel comfortable with this guy on your lease? A guy with an assault with a deadly weapon arrest and a known hot head around guns and alcohol has me concerned. I am not sure I want to be around when he is there and I sure don't want my kids to be around him ever, but he lives fairly close and is there most every weekend. Getting off the lease is the last thing I want to do, but if I can't enjoy myself and bring my kids what's the point? Oh, he's a family member and his father is the lease manager...ugghh. A talk with his father is in order before the season. Any suggestions?

If he is a felon he shouldnt be around guns period. It is against the law!

I'm doubting by his record that he gives a rip about what his dad thinks. He may just keep him on so he doesn't get choked out.

This, forgot about that. Possibly with the conviction on the violent offense, he may be prohibited from having ANY projectile weapon. Would suck if the gw showed up opening day........

He was given deferred adjudication for the 2011 charge, but I'm not sure about the deadly weapon arrest other than I know it happened. Possible he's not a convicted felon.

If you are concerned about his behavior and being around your children and yourself, you need to follow thru on above if he is there or pull out of the lease. In my mind, any other choice (ignoring the situation) is perpetuating the danger and condoning the actions before hand as well. Sounds like a bully that needs put in his place.
Personally I would not remain on a lease no matter how good it is, with someone with a volatile personality as this as well as little regard for the laws or other people. No animal out there is worth it.

Agree. Also, remember any felons are not allowed to be near, around or possess any firearms unless a pre something muzzleloader but other than that is a no-no. Maybe find out if he's a felon or what?

Good luck having a talk with the father!

A hunting lease is not worth putting you or your family in a such a volatile situation.

                    I'd find new hunting grounds.

You hit the nail on the head! If you don't feel safe or comfortable on the lease then you are missing the most important part of the lease. Obviously he isn't going anywhere so it's probably time you do.

Yep, I'm not sure I'd have a word with his father just yet. I'd place a call to the GW and let him make an opening weekend visit "randomly" if he checks the guy out and the guy is "clean" then maybe a word with the father after that, but probably time to get off the lease. If he is in any violation, then problem solved. I'd avoid the conversation with the father before hand simply because it will probably send up the red flag on why the GW shows up. Might upset the guy and given his past, he is likely to be confrontational.

Even though he may not be a convicted felon, it is more than likely a condition of his probation that he can't be in possession of a firearm and surely he has a condition prohibiting him from the consumption of alcohol. Call his PO.
