Lots of common sense things are not so common sense. An analogy to fitness/weightloss has been made regarding financial peace, that's a good illustration.

Most folks "know" what they need to do to be healthy, they lack the desire, discipline and support from others to do it.

Other common sense things that aren't so common anymore:
      Parenting/discipline
      Marriage/Relationship
      Business/management

Lots of "guru's" have made lots of Money teaching fundamental "common sense" concepts.

What make's Ramsey's program unique in my opinion is the Biblical perspective. Take my family for example, had a typical debt load. Lived within our means for the most part. Weren't real disciplined in saving, but we put some back from time to time. We made ends meet, most months were not living pay check to paycheck.

The biblical perspective that has been impactful to me was one of escaping bondage (Prov 22:7), as a borrower you are a slave to your lender, regardless of whether you can meet your responsibility or not. As believers we are called to be free of any and all bondage. The second message is one of stewardship. By eliminating debt & unnecessary living expenses, it frees us up to give as God directs us. There have been so many times that I have seen a need in my community, but not been able to help or at least give what I wanted. I think we will be able to do that now, not because we are super wealthy, but because we are blessed and we are directing each and every dollar to where it needs to go.

I've been wanting to take his course for a few years now. I don't owe anything on my vehicles or boat and carry a small CC balance. I am self-employed and at times seem to struggle and then seems like I've got more than enough. I've heard he had a plan for self-employed people and am hoping this will shed light on having balance throughout the year.

I guess i dont understand the desire to knock people trying to better themselves. "Its common sense blah blah" yes it is but some people need a littte structure to help the on the right path myself included. I aplogize for not being arrogant or smart enough to handle it on my own. Never mind i take that back, i got a little help im not aplogizing for that.
Is the stuff free? Sometimes for the actual person taking the class it is, churches and companies pay for others to take it. Dave ramsey encourages people to give away the books or for folks to buy the books used. Did he make money off of putting together a financial class for some folks? Yep, but i guess hes the only person to ever open a business and make money.
I took a 13 week class to get some structure/guidance to get rid of my debt all 280,000 thousand of it. It was a free class. I have no house payment, no car payment, no credit card payment and according to some here no common sense.

I spent maybe $100 on a couple of books and live seminars. I paid off over $100k in debt.

            I'd say I got my money's worth.

In addition I have helped mentor several people through the program, loaned them my books and feel like I had a part in their success. And that's a great feeling that at least I can't put a price on.

Im not sure about Daves plan but I know we have always lived by the spend way less than you make plan, sad thing is in American most americans live by the spend way more than you can ever pay for plan. Sad thing is they teach their children by their actions and the cycle never breaks. We are young (42) and live debt free with 2 houses, I have a decent job and my wife dont work, I always tell my kids its not what you make, its what you spend.........

I say use Dave's plan or the plan of your choice, but what ever you do get that debt paid off and live debt free, I honestly think that debt and financial trouble is one of the biggest reasons for bad health, worry causes problems, you will not believe the load that will be lifed off of you, now, there will be things you want that you will just not be able to buy, but it will be worth it.

Do what ever you have to do, if you do Dave's plan commit to it and stick to it.

I learned all my money management skills from my mom and step dad. Whatever they do, do the opposite.

if they had a dollar, they spent it. New Trucks, Cars, Swimming pools, houses, you name it. Pulled the last $3k out of my moms 401k to buy a boat.

                  rediculous

do you include your mortgage in that $280k of debt or not?

Personally I am not debt free, I have a mortgage, I kind of look at it like this, if I sold everything I own where would I be ? I would be setting pretty good, that would take all the fun out of it.

Yes my mortgage was included in that. We are actually paying rent right now while we look for a house to buy or build. We made money on our home sale and with what we have saved the next house could create some debt (little compared to what we had). But it will be paid off quickly. Part of the issue is high housing in Midland right now.

Lots of ways to be financially responsible without Dave Ramsey but I'm pumped for yall that are following the plan and seeing results.

Using a banks money is not bad if there are financial offsets.

We didnt sell our stuff, or our toys. I never sold a gun. I never sold our 75 corvette. I never sold the thousands of dollars worth of machinery in my knife shop. I never sold my wifes car. Heck we had both our kids while paying off our debt. Done on one full time income with a small part time income that paid for the daycare while she was working. I did sell our house so we could move to be closer to our family. I did sell my truck to buy the truck ive always wanted with cash. Where am I? Spending more time with my family than ever before, having more fun than i was ever able to do before. The class taught us how to budget and made us sit down and look at unneccesary spending. The sell your stuff part of the class was a very small part i have no idea why everyone thinks thats all the class says.

I agree and it's obviously been good for several people.

Those financial offsets or lack of seem to be most people's problems though.. It was grilled in me forever by my dad that being able to afford payments doesn't mean you can afford it and it has served him VERY well. I still finance my vehicles but the only thing I will finance that I couldn't write a check for is the house I'm building.
