The test is when you have a claim.

When my wife was hit head on by a drunk and we lost our son Allstate Insurance dropped us. Stating statistics show someone involved in a fatality accident will be involved in another one within a year. The guy at Allstate talked to me as I was the drunk driver… you’re in good hands my ***!

No one else would touch us, most of them stating the reason being that we were dropped by another company. State Farm picked us up and I’ve been very happy since, you will get what you pay for 99.9% of the time! I’m willing to pay a little more for good customer/personal service.

It comes and it goes, sometimes we are cheaper than other companies and sometimes we are more expensive. When I first went into insurance I could barely compete with Farmers, Allstate, Farm Bureau, Etc. and now with this recent rate increase of some companies I have friends that are agents with both companies that are crying bloody murder. Depending on the situation every insurance company is better than another price wise, look at the track record of a company though and that speaks volumes!

There are a lot of good companies out there and when it comes to auto coverage, there are a million variables. You really have to do your homework to know if you're getting a fair comparison.

Before you just up and change companies be sure you're getting all the available discounts your current company offers. Unless you visit with your agent on a regular basis, you may have some situations that qualify you for discounts that your agent isn't aware of.

Check to see you are getting multi-policy discounts if you have your home/auto/life with the same company. Are you getting discounts for years of claims free business? Are you getting discounts for Defensive Driving? Some companies offer discounts for certain occuppations (police, firefighters, teachers, etc).

Some companies offer discounts for vehicles that use alternative fuels. The list goes on and on. Sit down with your agent for a review and find out if you're getting all you have coming to you.

And consider different deductibles. Higher deductibles can save you big money sometimes. If you are going years between claims and are carrying a low deductible, you're just paying extra for a coverage you never use. You'll be money ahead to go with a higher deductible. The money you save in premiums over the years will more than pay for the difference in the deductible in the rare claim.

Are you paying monthly or semi-annually or annually? Some companies offer pretty substantial discounts if you pay semi-annually or annually as opposed to monthly. Some offer discounts if you pay by electronic bank draft.

You're spending thousands of dollars per year on insurance. You should be willing to spend some time to make sure you're getting your best deal.

Sometimes the 1-800-CHEAP companies aren't so cheap when you consider all the aspects.

Amen! USAA has done me well in price and service. When i was hit with one of their clients in '98, they paid out with no hesitation, and my truck was fixed with no complaints.

My real father is a Independent Agent, he sells Progressive for the clients that want cheap, or have not so good credit. Not his #1 choice by any means.

My stepfather is a body man in Euless, He tells me that Progressive is the worst when it comes time for claims and repairs on your car, says they cut every corner they can.

                  For what its worth.

I get a bundled-price-deal with Allstate, and since the individual policies are renewed at then-current rates, I can see how they would increase.

But life insurance, no matter if it's term or whole-life (cash value) has guaranteed premiums in my experience, and I don't think would increase if you dropped auto. But I've been wrong before.

Several years ago, I switched from Allstate to AAA on my auto and home ins. I got better coverage with a lower deductible and a much lower premium. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was a bunch. I've only had one claim with them. It was a leaking water pipe in my house. I had zero problems with them getting it fixed. I even did some of the sheetrock and painting repair myself and made a couple of grand by them paying me what their contractor said it would cost.

Also, when I joined, I didn't think I'd use their other benefits, but I have. They have tons of maps and really good vacation resources that are all free to members that I have used several times.

Anyone else with any good or bad experience with AAA?

I'm not sure if any other companies are doing it or not but Farmers just recently introduced a discount on certain life insurance policies if they have your autos insured also, so that discount would go away if you move the autos.

Got State Farm, had them since my wife and I got married. We kicked some tires to see what rates were out there and were amazed. Not many could compete with our current State Farm rates?? Either way I love the service we get from State Farm. I'll pay a little extra for that.

TB said it best as always...

Also for you progressive fans- good luck getting them to pay a claim. I have a client at least a couple times a month flat out get tboned by a progressive driver and they are the worse company in the world to pay a claim. I used to write some bad business with them if they had credit problems, wrecks, cant imagine anyone with a good record using them- they flat out suck! I refuse to write through them because they wont pay claims- it is like pulling teeth with them- They pay billions in advertising and little white claims vehs but they are the all times suckiest at paying!- bottom line and I deal with all of them

for all you State Farm is the bomb- that is funny right there...but I will say they have the most loyal customer base every I think- even when they are paying hundreds too much

I've been with State Farm for over 20 years and have never found a good reason to leave.

Howard since you don't seem to be a State Farm fan, who do you recommend?
