I am down for the hikes when I am not traveling for work.

      Good local (for me) spot:

      Lake Grapevine Northshore Trail

      - Quite a bit of up/down for DFW
      - Lots of bikers on the weekends, would be better weekday evening
      - 22 mi if you do all loops, we could pick the most difficult

As you can see, not a lot of flatland...

I've heard good things about Cedar Hill State Park but I havent tried it yet.

        Shane,

I don't have a pack on during most of my exercise since at this point, I am not doing any backpacking. I also only weigh 150lbs at 6 ft tall, so I can't carry a ton either... 20% of my body weight is only 30lbs! I might have 5-10 lbs on my back for water and stuff, but thats it. Like I said, its hard for me to put on muscle, but I am working on it.

That Grapevine trailhead is about 5 minutes from my house but its crowded as heck on weekends with bike traffic on narrow trails.

I hear good things a out Cedar Hill too.

That's not all bad. I weigh 205# at 6' tall (down from 220). My hunting pack won't weigh more than 20-25# probably, and it will get lighter every time I take a drink. But my 47 yr old knees sure do notice every pound they carry these days. All those steps UP are harder than they used to be when I was a 165# 6' tall 18 year old.

I just hope that if I get to kill a big ram that he dies uphill from the road somewhere.

But if we attach our bows to the packs and act in a gang mentality I bet the yuppies give us a wide birth

Put together a pack trip. What ever we do I say we start at day break

                Diamox.

Read up on altitude sickness. Some get it, most don't. My friend who lived at 8,800 ft elevation in CO said guests visiting him would come down with it. Not many, but you didn't know who would. It starts with a headache, which gets worse, then nausea.

Diamox is a prescription med from your Dr that prevents it but you must start it 2 days before- I have the day before I'd drive to CO. I don't know how I'd react without it.

Read up on it, talk to your doctor- mine was very willing to write me a script. It does make carbonated beverages taste different, some say beer is intolerable. I found a slight metallic taste and the beer was still beer.

Just a FYI. If you get sick you can't just start taking it- you need to drive to lower elevation to stop the symptoms.

More of anything I would really like this thread to be inspiration and create a challenge to push each other to work harder for our upcoming hunts. Showing stats, accomplishments, and results vs. just advice.

Advice is good when you can show results at the present time and pushes me to work harder. The mental mindset, drive, teamwork and competition is what I am looking to accomplish with this thread.

That being said ...lets schedule a day 2 weeks from now for a trail hike for the DFW folks.

Who knows a challenging trail within easy driving distance....Keep, you know of any good ones?
There are some trails just south of Cedar Hill State park off of 1382, quite a bit of hills and such.
