Confusing family tree question

Going to see the in-laws in a few weeks, and hit a snag when talking with my son about his same-age "cousin" Dylan that he runs around with when we see them. We all get along great, it's just trying to figure out the relation descriptions gets confusing.
My side of the family is the traditional, typical mom&dad/uncles/cousins in order, no real generational year range variances.
The in-laws' side of the tree is all over the place...between the extended families, and corresponding age/year differences in each generation, the "relation" descriptions get pretty long.
My wife(L) was born when her dad and mom were around 17yrs old, they divorced, and her dad married again some years later to V. V has a 10+ years younger brother (T, who is my wife's similar aged step-uncle?) who didn't get married until he was in his 30's and they have a son Dylan who is 8 like our son. Generationally that means Dylan(8) is my wife's (in mid-40s) cousin...so what is the relation between Dylan and our son?
I know there is no true "blood" relation due to it being the step-mom's side of the family, but is there a more accurate description of how the boys are related other than cousin?

I'm from Missouri originally, but liked described, it's not my side of the family that's confusing! :-) her side of the family is from Amarillo and California.

Second cousin. I have tons of them. I am 27 and have a second cousin in her high 60s. My grandma had 12 brothers and sisters so my extended family is huge. At some point we just call them all cousins and get on with the day.

Your wife and Dylan are cousins - for your son he would be his first cousin once removed.

2nd cousin and the uncle is his great uncle if you just leave out the fact of no blood relation

I believe the description would be first cousin-once removed (ignoring the non-blood issue). First cousins are always first cousins, but they are 'removed' along generational lines. Your wife's first cousin is your son's first cousin-once removed. Your wife's cousin will be your grandson/grandaughter's cousin-twice removed.

Whether this is the right description, I do not know. This is how it was explained to me by a geneologist.

Just call him a cousin and let it go.....My mother came along late in her parents life....I came along late in her life. I had many cousins that were 50+ years older than me. On my mom's side I was the 13th grandkid....there were about 10 great grandkids older than me....we are all just cousins......
